BUSINESS STARTUP

According to research majority of millionaires and billionaires are self made and have made it through creating or being part of a business.

If you have already decided that you want to start a business of that one thing you are very passionate about, then consider the fact that with starting this business you need to understand that businesses take a lot of commitment, dedication, hard work and constant evaluation in order to flourish.

Do not expect to get financially wealthy overnight. Below are a few reasons to start a business.

1. Reach your Dreams
If you have always wanted to be
wildly successful, starting our own
business could be a great start.

2. Leave an Inheritance
Pass the business down to your
children and grandchildren.

3. Abundance of Resources
With the dominance of the Internet,
it is easier than ever to find resources
you need, including loans, grants,
mentors and even startup capital.

4. There is Nothing Stopping You
What is really keeping you from being
an entrepreneur? Of course there are
risks, but there is nothing forcing you
not to take them.

5. Make the World a Better Place.
This may seem like an unrealistic
goal for you right now, but your
business really could make the
world a better place.

BENEFITS OF STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

1) Reward
Not everyone defines reward the
same way. For some it might be
seeing a new venture grow and
Succeed.
For others it may be conquering the
unknown and striking out on their
own. However you define reward,
starting a new company might hold
that promise for you.

2) Being Your Own Boss.
When you start a business and are
self-employed, you are your own
boss and ultimately control your
own destiny. Income.
Whether you view starting a
business as an economic necessity
or a way to make some additional
income, you might find it generates

3. Flexible hours
Owning your own business is hard
work and often requires long, odd
hours.
In some cases, having your own
business may allow you to have
more flexible hours.
Many stay-at-home parents, for
example, choose to become
entrepreneurs.

4. Purchasing an existing business
While it may not be viewed as
starting a business, purchasing an
existing business has proven
beneficial for many business owners
-but it undoubtedly requires both
financial and time investments.
For businesses that are already
profitable, these new business owners jump past the true startup phase into running a mature business.

5) Income
Whether you view starting a business as an economic necessity or a way to make some additional income, you might find it generates a new source of income.

In our next post we will be sharing the various challenges to expect when starting up your business.

Take the initiative to grow your value by contacting our team of professionals who will gladly give you one on one strategies to start your journey into financial freedom.

EXPLORING STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING RESILIENT SMES AMIDST COVID -19 PANDEMIC
...................................................................................................
SMEs are the lifeblood of our economy and contribute significantly towards Uganda’s GDP. Because of the varying definitions of “SMEs” it’s difficult to measure in quantitative terms their percentage contribution to GDP. It is not in dispute is that when the SMEs are suffering; the whole economy has to mourn. As a result, governments across the world are putting in place various stimulus measures to ensure that SMEs survive.

To a small extent, the government of Uganda is also responding with some fiscal measures to resuscitate the enterprises. I must state that most of these measures remain imprecise. As we wait for the government to do its part, we must also put in place measures to ensure our businesses survival in the short term and later alone thrive. I have put in place a few suggestions but remember that enterprises are not homogeneous. What works for A ltd may not work for B ltd or C ltd.

Formalization of the Enterprises
First things first, you must first exist before your survive. There are many enterprises that look formal when in actual sense they are informal. My view is that there is need for an enterprise to be formalized to improve its identity. This includes incorporation, acquiring TIN, trading licenses, certifications and necessary permits. This will include the chances of accessing credit, government support and many available funding opportunities from impact investors.

The entrepreneur
The resilience of an enterprise largely depends on the quality and character of the entrepreneur. You need a resilient mindset.
1. This can be achieved by improving your knowledge and skills by joining mentorship platforms (Agro-tourism, AWAN, CURAD, CV4A) etc.
2. It is also important to reduce on social disruptions such as wasting time of endless parties, burials and multiple relationships among other things.
3. Censure your ecosystem to ensure you are in a meaningful network and not naysayers.

Cash flow management
Cash flows are important to the existence of an enterprise. Positive cash flows determine the ability of an enterprise to meet its financial obligations make capital investments. An imbalance in cash inflows and cash outflows means that your enterprise will not be able to meet financial obligations, pay suppliers or undertake any investments. It limits your ability to access credit from banks. It is a shortcut to bankruptcy. So, there is need for prudent cash flow management.
1. Pay as little as possible; collect as much as possible.
2. Start asking for deposits upfront
3. Borrow funds using invoices
4. Sell invoices to other companies
5. Defer capital expenditures (CAPEX)
6. Renegotiate payments with your suppliers
7. Diversify revenue streams if possible
8. Offer discounts to flee capital in stock and become liquid
9. For service companies, consider taking advantage of co-work spaces such as innovation village, outbox, design hub to reduce on rent expenses.

Stakeholder Management
There is need to carry out a stakeholder analysis how the current situation of your enterprise affect different parties in the business chain. Normally, the key stakeholders include suppliers, customers, employees, retainers, regulatory bodies and the taxman. Have a customized solution for each stakeholder. Keep the stakeholders engaged and negotiate with them where there pending obligations.

Human Resource
Keeping a motivated human resource can be difficult in the current situation where most enterprises have imbalances in cash flows.
1. We need a highly motivated workforce to survive and later alone thrive.
2. Have a core team with flexible skills. For instance, an administrative assistant can double as the social media marketer or accounts assistant.
3. Consider part time or commissioned workers for some functions such as marketing, sales, IT.
4. Consider remote working and facilitate the workers with tools needed for e-work.
5. Improve their skills through online learning platforms such as VC4A.

Trade Associations
There is an old adage that “in unity we build strength”. Being a member of an association of even a cooperative will help in addressing some of the challenges faced. Each industry has unique challenges and it important they are tacked collectively. Associations help in collective lobbying for fair tax and other regulations, negotiating with banks to have favorable credit terms and sharing costs for consultancies, market research etc. Agro-tourism is one such association. We have AWAN for women in agribusiness and other sector specific associations.

Embrace the world of Internet
The internet is the new highway of doing business. There are many options such as facebook, whatsup, websites, twitter and many more. Every enterprise worth talking about needs to have an internet trail. Please note that these platforms should shift from merely informing audiences that you exist. They should be transformed into real workplaces, showrooms, shops or workshops. They need to be interactive, can receive inquires and provide timely feedback.

Take advantage of available grants
Prepare a selling business plan and elevator statement is a short description of an idea, product or company that explains the concept in a way such that any listener can understand it in a short period of time. A business model canvas is a simple way for organize your business plan. Finally make sure you do not become part of the COVID-19 statistics.
