FOR AGRIBUSINESSES
For those in Agribusinesses, here is an insightful article on ESG for Agribusinesses that was published in The Daily Monitor Newspaper last Saturday, 17th June, 2023.
Very Insightful for our country that is focusing on Agro-Processing and Value addition on Agricultural Products.
it is important to note that 80% of Ugandans live in rural areas and practice agriculture for domestic and a smaller %age for Commercial reasons. Government launched a Parish Development Module to stimulate production, value addition and inclusion in the money economy at the Parish level.
ESG becomes an important aspect.
Why agribusinesses must embrace ESG compliance Agribusinesses are incorporating ESG factors as non-financial performance indicators

*International Labour Day 2023:*
It is observed globally on May 1 every year. The day spreads awareness about workers' rights and recognises their accomplishments. Labour Day or May Day has different origin stories in different countries. But the common thing is that the day focuses on the achievements and contributions of workers.
In the wake of growing ESG concerns, Labour day creates awareness about the rights and opportunities of every Labour which they should get for their welfare and betterment. It helps organisations reflect on the fact that "PEOPLE DON'T WORK FOR MONEY, THEY WORK FOR A BETTER JUSTIFICATION OF LIFE".
As we know that labour is the part of society on which all economic advancement rests. Even in the technology era of the present time, the importance of labour has not decreased. For example, in industry, trade, agriculture, construction of buildings, bridges and roads etc. contribution of labour plays a crucial role. So, we can say that labour is the aggregation of all human physical and mental effort used in the creation of goods and services. It is the primary factor for production.
Happy International Labour Day!

Since our inception in 2000 at the onset of privatisation, ICGU has trained over 35% women in Corporate Governance.
According to the ICGU integrated report published in October, 2021, 47% women undertook the Online Corporate Governance Trainings and 63% coming from public Institutions.
The AfDB 2015 publication titled "WHERE ARE THE WOMEN: Inclusive Boardrooms in Africa's Top listed Companies?" - the majority of African companies have atleast one woman board director. However, about one-third (32.9%) have no women on the board, and another one-third only have one female director (33.6%). So majority of the African Companies have minimal women presence on boards.
In East Africa, Kenya has the highest percentage of women board directors with 19.8%, Tanzania 14.3%, Uganda 12.9% and the others below 11%.
On this Womens Day, under the theme "Embrace Equity" - ICGU believes that the Potential of Africa's successful transformation requires concurrently removing barriers to women's leadership and participation.

Traditionally, governments have been the main provider of public infrastructure and other public goods. However, budgetary constraints have made alternative options for financing necessary to supplement government resources.
This has prompted African governments to recognizePPPs as one of the avenues for promoting effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability in public service delivery and sustainable development.
In Uganda however, we do not see heightened use of PPPs to adopt and benefit from
this innovative way to fund and deliver infrastructure and services.
Then, how do we make PPPs work in Uganda?
