On June 18, Kabubbu Development Project (KDP), with support from Local Coalition Accelerator Uganda (LCA), convened members of 15 Self-Help Groups, community leaders, government representatives, financial institutions, and development partners for a Reflection and Learning Convening under the theme: "Tapping into Available Economic Opportunities for Growth."

The convening served as an important platform for participants to reflect on their progress, exchange lessons learned, celebrate achievements, and explore practical pathways for strengthening household incomes and building resilient communities.

The participants benefited from insightful presentations by:

🔹 Mr. James Ssenoga, Parish Chief, challenged groups to organize themselves, formalize their operations, and position themselves to access government programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM).

🔹 Ms. Safia Dichiru, Branch Manager, Pride Bank – Gayaza, who equipped participants with practical knowledge on savings, investment, financial discipline, and accessing affordable government-supported financing opportunities.

🔹 Ms. Rose Ndagire, Deputy Lord Mayor and Guest of Honour, who emphasized the importance of unity, collaboration, and community-led development as drivers of sustainable progress.

🔹 Mr. Vincent Nsereko, Chairperson of the Local Coalition Accelerator (LCA), who reaffirmed the coalition's commitment to mobilizing resources for self-help groups and encouraged all groups to register in order to access government programmes, open bank accounts, and unlock more growth opportunities.

One of the most inspiring messages of the day came from Mr. Nsereko:

"Registration is not just a legal requirement; it is the gateway to opportunities, partnerships, financing, and sustainable growth."

Through the Self-Help Group approach, KDP continues to support communities in saving together, learning together, investing together, and building locally owned solutions that improve livelihoods and strengthen resilience.

Celebrating Skills, Talent, and New Beginnings

Fonthill Vocational Institute, the vocational arm of Kabubbu Development Project, headed by Ms. Christine Nalunkuuma celebrated its second graduation ceremony over the weekend, with 74 graduates receiving certificates in various vocational courses.

The day began with a joyful procession through Manyangwa before returning to the institute for a colourful celebration of achievement.
One of the most exciting moments was the fashion showcase by our Tailoring and Garment Design graduates, who proudly displayed wedding gowns, changing dresses, cultural wear office wear, and casual outfits they had designed and tailored themselves.

We also celebrated outstanding graduates, including Suzan Nabankema, who completed a Certificate in Nursery Teaching Training and shared how the course has made her a more innovative, patient, accountable, and effective teacher, contributing to increased enrolment at her school. Madrine Najjuko, who completed a Certificate in Catering and Hotel Management, was also recognised for her exceptional performance.

KDP Director, Mr. Enoch Kagoda encouraged graduates to use their skills to start businesses and create employment opportunities.
Chief Guest Mr. Didas Orikiriza, Executive Director of National Private Educational Institutions Association–Uganda (NPEIA-U), reminded graduates that today's job market demands both knowledge and practical skills, while also encouraging them to uphold strong values throughout their careers.
In a generous show of support, the Guest of Honour, Hajji Baker Kazibwe, Mayor of Kasangati Town Council, pledged to donate five electric sewing machines to strengthen practical learning at the institute.

Following the emergency support from Quicken Trust, Risk Pool Alliance (RPA), and the Gould Family Foundation, Kabubbu Development Project has expanded its Ebola response beyond the health centre and into the heart of the communities we serve.

Working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Wakiso District Health Office, our teams are conducting Ebola awareness and sensitisation sessions in schools, churches, markets, and community gathering places.
These sessions are equipping community members with accurate, life-saving information on how Ebola spreads, how to recognise its signs and symptoms, how to protect themselves through proper hygiene and infection prevention practices, and what to do if they suspect a case. By replacing fear with facts, we are helping communities remain vigilant while restoring confidence in accessing essential healthcare services.

Together with our partners, we have also strengthened infection prevention by distributing handwashing facilities, providing PPE for frontline teams, and supporting coordinated community outreach.
Every school we visit, every church we engage, and every market we reach is another opportunity to protect lives.
Because preparedness doesn't begin when an outbreak occurs—it begins with informed.

For weeks, Kabubbu Development Project (KDP) went silent.
Not because we had nothing to say, but because we were responding to an Ebola scare that tested our staff, our health system, and our resilience in ways we never imagined.

On 30 May 2026, we received a call from the Ministry of Health that changed everything. A patient who had previously sought treatment at Kabubbu Health Centre IV had tested positive for Ebola Virus Disease. Soon after, seven of our health workers were identified as contacts and transferred to a government isolation facility for monitoring. With this, our community was gripped by fear, and KDP faced one of the greatest tests in its history.
For a moment, time seemed to stand still.
Questions flooded our minds. Would our colleagues be safe? How would we continue providing healthcare with seven members of staff suddenly unavailable? Would our community continue to trust us?

As fear spread, our reality became even more challenging. The remaining health workers worked longer hours to keep essential health services running, but another painful truth confronted us: we did not have sufficient resources to respond to an emergency of this magnitude. We urgently needed more personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep our frontline teams safe, additional handwashing facilities and hygiene supplies to strengthen infection prevention in the community, and temporary health workers to fill the gaps left by colleagues in isolation. Yet these were resources we simply did not have.

Then came the first ray of hope.
At a time when our resources were stretched beyond capacity, Quicken Trust became the first partner to stand with us, providing emergency funding that enabled us to begin responding to the crisis when we needed it most.

Building on that initial response, Risk Pool Alliance (RPA) and the Gould Family Foundation also stepped forward with additional emergency support. Together, this support enabled us to recruit temporary health workers, procure PPE, strengthen infection prevention and control at the health centre, and distribute handwashing facilities to schools, churches, and other community spaces. Working alongside Wakiso District health office, we have also mapped communities for coordinated Ebola sensitization and launched risk communication through local radio, community megaphones, and direct community engagement to dispel myths and restore confidence in seeking healthcare.

Uganda discharged its last confirmed Ebola patient on 16 July 2026, a milestone that gives us hope. The country has since entered the mandatory 42-day countdown before it can be declared Ebola-free. Yet, with Ebola cases continuing to rise in neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo, preparedness remains essential. Public health emergencies do not end when the headlines fade; they require sustained vigilance, strong partnerships, and resilient community health systems.

Over the coming weeks, we will share more of our Ebola response journey and the lessons we have learned about protecting communities during a public health emergency.

Every crisis reminds us that resilient health systems are not built by institutions alone. They are built through partnerships, preparedness, and people who choose to stand together when it matters most.

Today, on the International Day of the African Child, we join the rest of Africa in reflecting on this year's theme: "Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa."

At Kabubbu Development Project., we understand that when a child has access to clean water and proper hygiene, they are healthier, attend school more regularly, and are better positioned to achieve their full potential. This is why we have invested in drilling boreholes that provide safe and reliable water sources for communities, thereby reducing the burden on children, especially girls, who often walk long distances in search of water. Through our hygiene promotion campaigns at Kabubbu Community Primary School and Trust High School, we are also equipping children with the knowledge and practices they need to maintain their health and thrive.

By improving access to safe water and promoting good hygiene practices, we are helping to prevent waterborne diseases that continue to threaten the health, education, and wellbeing of children in many communities.

As we celebrate the resilience, dreams, and potential of every African child, we reaffirm our commitment to creating communities where children can grow up with dignity, good health, and equal opportunities.

Every drop of clean water, every hand washed, and every child empowered is a step towards a brighter future for Africa.
