Corporate governance is defined as a system by which organizations are directed and controlled or system of rules, policies and practices that dictate the management and operations of a company

A family business on the other hand refers to a business or company whose majority shares are owned and decision-making is influenced by members of the same family. SMEs stands for small and medium size enterprises, majority of which are family businesses

They account for a large percentage of SME’s in Uganda and account for about 90% of the private sector

The owners of such businesses always get themselves widely in the everyday operational functions and neglect the more important strategic issues such as corporate governance. While it’s worthy while to give your all your business, it is also important to do so with the end in mind, have a picture of how you want your business to look like in a long after you, call it business continuity!

Corporate governance helps you to establish management structures and assign responsibilities to keep the company standing even in your absence
The purpose of those structures is to improve strategy and control mechanisms of the business and, to organize the communication and relationship between the owners/family members and business executives

Corporate governance only comes about through individual responsibilities of the parties, fairness, accountability and transparency to all the relevant organs for steady and sustained performance over the long-term. It requires strong leadership, teamwork, and a culture committed to both ethical and operational values.
