Top TV’s Pastor Ssenyonga to invest Ugx 2.3B in Ugandan film industry
The paster of Christian Life Church Pastor Jackson Ssenyonga has unleashed a huge campaign to uplift local talent in Uganda.
The move according to Ssenyonga is aimed at identifying, supporting and standadizing local talent in Uganda so as to be able not only to tell a Ugandan story to Ugandans, but as well creating more job opportunities for Ugandans.
The campaign produced by Top TV dubbed ‘Koodi ba dear,’ is a local programming of Ugandan local movie series that revolve around Ugandan cultures, traditions coordinated with day to day happenings in different parts of the Country.
While addressing journalists at Christian Life Church alias ‘Home of P5‘ located in Makerere Kavule, a Kampala suburb, Ssenyonga cited that local talent in Uganda hasn’t been given attention,a reason Top media has come up with a huge campaign to help those with talent utilize it to market Uganda, earn a living and as well develop the economy and the entertainment and film industry in Uganda.
Ssenyonga stressed that TV in Uganda has become boring, only filled with political programs and a lot more that in most cases do not even benefit the viewers.
“TV programming has become very boring in Uganda,if it’s not news stories, accidents been telecast, then it has to be politics and this kind of programming is of no benefit to the viewers and members of the public.
Broadcasters are not full filling one of UCC’s guidelines that clearly states that TV has to consist of 70% local programming thus you find most of the stations relaying only foreign programs including Nigerian, Bollywood movies,Opera and Philippian soaps and series among others but not our own Ugandan movies.”
Ssenyonga revealed that Top media has since it’s inception 25 years back, been supporting local talent inform of music but is now taking it a lot higher with it’s ‘koodi ba dia’ campaign that will never leave any talent behind.
Top TV has for all those years supported local music in the country but we deemed it necessary to make it 70% local as required by UCC and I believe with this compaign,no more talented Ugandan will sleep hungry, the won’t rot with their talents as we will look out for them and explore their talents.
When asked about the cost of production, Ssenyonga said that though it’s one of the biggest challenges faced by TV programming and most especially local talent production,Top TV has put in over Shs2.3billion this year alone to come up with quality productions.
This website understands that the station has sofar produced over 8 local Ugandan series 4 of which are already running on TV.

Top TV summoned over moderator’s conduct
Uganda Communications Commission has summoned the management of Top Television to defend itself against complaints that a programme aired on 20 April 2020 was in breach of the Minimum Broadcasting Standards.
During the show, parts of which have been widely shared on social media, the moderator Joan Nakintu Lule attacked her guest, Miss Uganda Oliver Nakakande, in a manner that was widely perceived as unprofessional.
The Commission wrote to Top Television on 22 April 2020, indicating that a member of the public had complained that the station’s news broadcasts are not balanced to ensure harmony and that its presenters are unprofessional, citing the “Cocktail” programme that aired on 20 April 2020 at 8 am as an example.
“The complainant alleges that during the broadcast of the show “Cocktail”, the presenter or host was unprofessional, failed to meet journalistic principles or ethics, and thus breached the broadcasting standards,” the UCC Ag. Executive Director Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo wrote on 22 April 2020.
“The complainant further alleges that during the show, Ms Nakintu Joan Lule as a host of the program was unfair, lacked objectivity and impartiality required of a presenter.”
The Commission has accordingly commenced investigations into the conduct of Top Television, invoking sections 5(1) (b), (x), (j), 31,45 and 41of the Uganda Communications Act 2013.
To facilitate the investigation, the station is required to submit a recording of the said programme, alongside the programme script indicating the theme and topic of discussion that was covered.
The station must also provide proof of requisite qualifications and registration of the producer, programmes director and host of the programme as required under Sections 5 and 27 of the Press and Journalist Act.
In addition, the Commission has directed that broadcasting of the programme be suspended until after the investigation has been concluded, in order to mitigate the risk of further breach.
As UCC awaits an explanation within five days, Top Television has moved to repair the damage caused by its broadcast, with the moderator apologising on air, and the station issuing an apology of its own through a press statement in which it admitted that the presenter had “exhibited unprofessional conduct”.
