TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY - Are you ready for that Road Trip? Is your driver ready for that long trip? How do you know and what does it take to be ready?

Good Journey Management is all about defensive driving skills, preparation and attitude. The ability to respect traffic laws, to be alert at all times, be patient and courteous to other drivers, to use correct judgement and most importantly, to drive defensively! If you can do all this, you are already a good journey manager.

As a Certified Logistics & Transport specialist, my 12 years so far working in different fields; the Oil & Gas Industry mostly, I have been taught one important thing - SAFETY FIRST!!! There is not any one moment that I let my drivers depart with personnel or cargo without a SAFETY briefing (A Tool Box Talk). Tool box/Safety briefings are informal group discussions that focus on a particular safety issue. They enable us to remind and up-skill drivers to better manage challenges on the roads and prepare for the Journey. This has always been a company/business culture. If we didn't carry it out physically, I would do the talk on phone.

So, how do you prepare for that Road trip?

1. Get your vehicle road ready - Perform regular maintenance like oil changes, tune ups, and battery and tire pressure checks. If you’re not sure what to do, have a qualified technician inspect your vehicle. Make sure you or your driver and the vehicle are ready for the road (is your driver sober, well rested, in perfect health? Is the vehicle in good mechanical condition?).

2. Focus on the road - Be aware of the conditions around you (Watch out for other road users, road construction sites, road signs, extreme weather conditions i.e. heavy rain, snow, fog etc).

3. Eliminate distractions (Talking on the phone, eating on wheels, grooming self while driving (ladies), extremely talkative co passenger etc.)

4. Control your emotions (An angry, anxious, fearful or stressed driver is a Red Flag on the roads. Say NO to road rage! Say YES to calm, relaxed, and alert driving).
5. Know everything going on around you. Stay alert and always look well ahead down the road and around your vehicle.

6. Plan an escape Route - When climbing up or rolling down the highway, especially in heavy traffic, always plan an ‘escape route’. You do this by keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you.

7. Keep an emergency kit in your car. Especially before you head out on a road trip, prepare for the unexpected by keeping these items on board: Cellphone and car charger, First aid kit, Flashlight, Flares, Jumper cables, Candles and matches, Non-perishable food items, Water, Blankets, Personal safety awareness (masks, sanitizers, medicines, personal effects, Vital documentation (Passport, National I.Ds, Vaccination cards etc).

8. ALWAYS, ALWAYS use your best common sense and correct judgement.
You, the people or cargo that you move are highly important. Please drive and stay safe on the roads. Always REMEMBER, SAFETY FIRST!!!

2021 has obviously been a challenging year for many. However, inspite of the challenges, there's still so much to be thankful for; a roof over our heads, food, warmth, friends, loved ones, business and career opportunities, and most importantly, the breath of God running through our lungs.

As we go through this season into new territory, may we be reminded of God's unconditional love, His faithfulness, His goodness, His promises that are Yes and Amen, and that whatever life throws at us, His plans for us are not of evil, but of hope, peace and prosperity. (Jeremiah 29:11).

TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY - Are you or your loved ones Driving Safely In The Rain?

The Rains are here again, and they are good; but they pause risks and hazards more so on the roads i.e. slippery roads, flooded roads, falling objects etc.

Due to the rains we are currently having, there is potential for falling trees, branches, poles etc. along the roads.

HOW CAN RAIN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT?

Decreased Visibility - During rain storms, it can be difficult for drivers to see other cars. When rain is combined with dirty water thrown up from the road by other drivers, windshields can quickly become dirty.

Diminished Traction - Rain can make it more difficult to stay on a roadway, to stop, or to avoid colliding with other vehicles. This is especially true when it first starts raining, because accumulated oils will rise to the road surface and cause the road to become especially slippery.

Conduct of Other Drivers - An excessively timid driver will overestimate the danger of the weather conditions, and will drive at unreasonable low speed. When the weather limits the number of available traffic lanes, such as can happen following heavy rain, this type of driver can cause traffic to back up.

High potential for falling Debris, trees, branches & Poles.

SUGGESTED WAYS

• Plan your journey (Journey Management Plan) – is there a route with less exposure to the risk of falling trees or poles? Choose another route.

• Watch trees and bushes on the roadside.

• Drive slower - This may seem like an obvious tip, but it is a very important one.
Rainwater causes the grease and oil that have built up on the road, to surface. This causes tires to lose traction on the road. If you drive slower, this increases your chances for better tire reaction. The other point that most people miss is that driver perception is decreased, so driving slower allows for better reaction times.

• Look well ahead, that way you don’t need to take your eye off the road and you can see any windy patches before you get to them.

• Keep an eye on what is happening to other vehicles.

Thank you and please drive and stay safe on the roads this rainy season.

TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY – Mobiles & Driving - A Deadly Mix!!!

People who use a mobile (Cell) phone when driving are four times more likely to have a serious crash and Hands-free devices are not safer. Using a mobile phone while driving increases (you) the driver's risk of causing a crash. Drivers are distracted, decreasing the driver's concentration and awareness on the road, leading to more car crashes. Whether you’re driving self, people or even moving cargo, SAFETY should always COME FIRST!!!

SUGGESTED WAYS

• Use your voice mail option to answer your call while driving.

• Never take notes, look up phone numbers, read or send SMS.

• Should the call be extremely urgent and cannot wait, find a safe place to park; then
answer the caller or call back.

You, the people or cargo that you move are highly important. Please drive and stay safe on the roads. Always REMEMBER, SAFETY FIRST!!!

The CMA CGM Group is stepping up its strategic development in logistics by creating a specialized air freight division: CMA CGM AIR CARGO. To support its expansion into air freight, the CMA CGM Group is buying four 60-tonne-payload A330-200Fs, which came into service between 2014 and 2016. With a range of 4,000 nautical miles, they will connect Europe with the rest of the world. The CMA CGM Group will entrust the operation of its freighter fleet to a European airline.

Rodolphe Saade, chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, said, “In response to the growing demand from our customers for agile logistics solutions, we are creating a new division within the CMA CGM Group dedicated to air transport: CMA CGM Air Cargo. This division will launch with four Airbus A330-200F aircraft and will leverage commercial partnerships with airlines in order to deliver global coverage. This is a major milestone in the development of our logistics services.”

This move into air freight strengthens the group’s transport and logistics business, allowing it to offer its customers a new range of comprehensive, agile and customized solutions. CMA CGM AIR CARGO represents a major new component of the CMA CGM Group in both operational and commercial terms.
