Did you know?

It's in Uganda where we find half of world's mountain Gorillas mounting to 1006 and the rest are found in the neighbouring Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Uganda the tracking of these great apes happens in Buhoma, Ruhija Rushaga, Nkuringo in Bwindi impenetrable forest and Ntebeko in Mugahinga national park.
These contain over 14 Groups which include Mubare, Habinyanja, Bitukura, Oruzogo, Nkuringo, Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Bweza, Busingye, Nyakagezi and the research group of Kyaguriro.

For maintenance of Environment carrying capacity only 8 people are allowed to visit every family per day for 1 hour.

Gorillas groups are normally headed by dominant male called the silver back who normally selects where the group is to feed and sleep. The dominant male normally weighs 120 kgs(260Ibs).

RIP

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sgt. Scot Guma who was killed by elephants while on duty to rescue communities of Nwoya in Murchison Fall National Park on November, 15, 2020.

The late Sgt. Guma together with four colleagues had earlier responded to a distress call that elephants had escaped from the park. The community members called the rangers to help and chase the elephants back into the park. While trying to scare shoot them, the elephants became wild and attacked them. As the rangers tried to flee for safety and reorganisation, Sgt. Guma unfortunately fell in a shallow ditch where elephants trampled on him leaving him with serious injuries. He died while being rushed to Anaka for medical attention.

The Executive Director UWA Sam Mwandha says that the late Sgt. Guma has been a hard-working and selfless staff who executed his work well while handling human wildlife conflict and operational work of patrols. β€œThe institution will greatly miss his commitment, hard work, bravery and passion for conservation. He has paid the ultimate price of conserving our wildlife resources, he is a conservation hero” he said.
Rangers at Wangkwar sector where Sgt Guma was stationed have been very active in offering quick problem animal interventions to communities surrounding that sector.

The late Sgt.Guma Scot joined UWA on 1st May 1999 as a private ranger raising through the ranks to Sergeant. Before his deployment in Murchison Falls National Park, he had worked in East Madi Wildlife Reserve for 10 years handling issues of problem animals like elephants and hippos as far as the boarder of South Sudan as well as encroachment among others.

He leaves behind a widow and four children.
May his soul rest in peace.

Conservation efforts in high gear. 13-02-2020 the parliamentary forum for conservation and sustainable tourism(PFCST) in collaboration with various stakeholders met and discussed on the possible ways of harnessing synergies for conservation and sustainable tourism as well as bridging the gap between parliamentarians and sector stakeholders with special emphasis on conservation and sustainable tourism development. Stakeholders in attendance included members of parliament, legislators, government officials, tourism agencies and European union ambassadors.PFCST Is a platform for members of parliament from different political umbrellas who come together to collectively generate visibility and provide leadership to development of tourism, wildlife, cultural resources, conservation and management.

Cultural tourism on threat by Bisaka Religion in Uganda. This was evidenced when Believers bunt Bunyoro kingdom cultural sites called Semweema in Kakumiro district in Bunyoro sub region. This attracted live bullets due to the Fights between the two sides the host community and
Owobosobozi Biska believers(Faith of Unity). The act of burning down cultural site attached to Bunyoro Kingdom at Semweema hill threatens the continuity and preservation of Bunyoro culture.

The faith of unity believers who claim to have been sent by Bisaka who is presiding over a function at Kakeka playground in Kakumiro town today , suspected the cultural site to be used to witchdoctors and ritualists.
Over five people have been arrested and several injured.
There was a commotion as people pelted stones against Bisaka belivers for attacking the cultural site.
It took the intervention of UPDF unit that guards Bisaka to quell the pandemonium. However, the UPDF soldiers are now arresting people in town over suspected involvement in the attack against Bisaka believers.
