I am Ayane Hisamatsu, an OJT at JICA Uganda office. I had the privilege of visiting the NUFLIP II project in Northern Uganda.

The NUFLIP II seeks to support small-scale farmers to improve their livelihoods through market-oriented vegetable production, improved nutrition, food-stock management, and improved joint household management by household heads.

The Project Team has reached out to a number of Agicultural Officers to work togther and uplift the livelihoods of people in Acholi sub-region.

During training sessions which I attended, it was evident that the project team is doing its best to ensure that target farmers learn improved vegetable production techniques.

I also noticed a good relationship between the consultant, local leadership and the local people, as the focus is on working and building together.

" I want everyone in my beloved Acholi sub-region to be happy," said Mr. Ohno, the Chief Advisor for the project.

I believe that this project will make many people in the Acholi sub-region happy and prosperous.

Mr. Samson Ojok, a rice breeder from the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) has returned to Uganda safely from Japan after he completed JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP), “Development of Core Agricultural Researcher for Promotion of Rice Production in Sub-Saharan Africa”.

He shared his experiences excitedly in the one-and-a-half month training in Japan. The followings are his comments:

---------------------------------------------

My name is Samson Ojok. My duty is contributing to develop new varieties of rice in Uganda as a rice breeder.

I participated JICA on“Development of Core Agricultural Researcher for Promotion of Rice Production in Sub-Saharan Africa” in JICA Chubu from 7th June to 11th August.

This program aims to acquire basic but broad knowledge including rice plant, rice cultivation, and research technologies, which are prerequisite knowledge for core agricultural researchers.

I joined this KCCP to step up my career as a scientist in Uganda.

I gained knowledge and skills to cover various fields of rice development through not only fruitful lectures facilitated Japanese professors but also visits to the prefectural agricultural research institute, Kagoshima University. I interacted with fellow scientists from other African countries such as Senegal, Zambia, DRC, Madagascar, and Ethiopia with whom I created new human network.

My impressive subjects during the training were rice protection, soil and water management for rice growth, molecular breeding, rice physiology and data collection/analysis.

The field of rice protection includes pathology and entomology. It has a strong linkage with my current duty in NaCRRI; molecular breeding.

I will utilize the knowledge and experiences gained in Japan and enhance perennial rice breeding through ratooning in Uganda and I would like to make it part of my PhD research and the evaluation of rice variety in my work.

In Kagoshima University, I met and interacted with several students from different countries such as Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Kenya, South Sudan and Japan. Discussions and research with them were precious learning experiences because I could learn from not only Japanese researchers but also the activities of other participants while they also learnt from me.

During the stay in Japan, I also enjoyed Japanese culture so much.

I got a close view of “Sakurajima” in Kagoshima prefecture, one of the most famous volcanos in Japan and enjoyed a footbath at a hot spring near “Sakurajima” with my friends.

Furthermore, I ate Sushi! Raw fish is not familiar in Uganda, but I liked Sushi so much.

I will continue to contribute to rice development in Uganda by using these experiences in Japan from now on!

Safe menstrual hygiene is linked to equal educational opportunities

In Uganda, girls miss two to three days of school monthly during their periods due to poor or non-existent menstrual hygiene management mechanisms in schools. This in the long run, affects their performance in class.

To change the status quo, JICA has extended facilitation to Global Bridge Network, a Japanese NGO, to support and improve schools’ educational environment for adolescent girls by addressing menstrual hygiene challenges; This support is targeting 3000 pupils in 30 schools in Mubende, Butambala and Wakiso districts as well as 1200 community members in the same districts.

Since 2021, pupils in these schools have been oriented on s*x education, gender awareness and trained on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) from which they have formed MHM clubs that do not only boost their esteem but also help deconstruct the stigma attached to menstruation.

Also, learners as well as community members have been trained in making cheap reusable sanitary pads which have not only helped keep the girls in schools but also been a source of livelihood.

Hello,

My name is Charlotte Nabasa, a JICA ABE Initiative Scholar (8th Batch) from 🇺🇬, and I am on a challenging but exciting pursuit of knowledge and passion for civil engineering at Kyoto University in Japan.

🌸 It's been an epic journey since I set foot in this enchanting land last April, and I can't wait to share my most awe-inspiring experience with you all!

I was fortunate enough to be part of a phenomenal seminar on understanding Awaji Island's regional revitalization, organised by JICA Kansai. This was a memorable experience where I had the opportunity to learn and engage in a tour of the picturesque AWAJI island, filled with nature, unique building structures, and breath-taking views of the sea. The island is said to be Japan's very own cradle of civilization, as ancient writings reveal it was the first island formed in the archipelago.😮

It is linked to the big cities of Kobe and Osaka City by the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, the second-longest suspension bridge in the world, completed in 1998 with a span of 1,991m. Learning about this bridge and its transformative power and contribution to the development of this unique island inspired me further to build my career in bridges and create more opportunities for every Ugandan without access.

During the tour, we witnessed engaging theatre performances, ate delightful seafood at the iconic Nojima Scoula, and even unleashed our inner drummers with an exhilarating Taiko drum experience! 🥁 It was a magical experience that etched everlasting memories of Japanese culture in my heart.

As an avid traveler, I have visited some cities in Japan, including Tokyo, each with its own unique characteristics that make them memorable. However, Awaji Island, from the tour and detailed explanations, sparked a sense of excitement within me about its potential to become the epitome of gastronomy, culture, health, and environmental preservation—a true island of excellence in all the aspects I witnessed during the trip.

I had the opportunity to interact with officials from the PASONA Group, which is leading the charge in revitalising Awaji Island. I couldn't help but share my hopes of applying similar concepts in Uganda using civil engineering as my tool.

My time in Japan has been an incredible experience that will remain etched in my memory. I have made lasting friendships and connections both at school and outside school and I am excited to see what the future holds. Thank you, JICA Uganda for this opportunity.

The Livestock Farmer Support Program for Controlling Tick and Tick-borne Diseases (STOP) - Grassroot Project is being implemented in Kiboga District, under a JICA- facilitated partnership with the Research Center for Tropical Diseases & Vector Control (RTC) based at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Japan and Makerere University.

The project, close to cutting the goal tape next year in March, continues to build capacity of veterinarians, livestock technicians, and farmers on ticks and tick-borne diseases control.

JICA Uganda and the project team had a successful monitoring visit to the project sites in Kiboga District where they learned many positive results in regard to the importance of tick prevention and how the project has implemented an effective tick-control management program for farmers in livestock production.

It was pleasant to note that initially, ticks & tick-borne diseases are a problem to livestock and a bigger challenge to livestock farmers in Kiboga district. However, in recent years, with support from specialised experts under the STOP project, equipped farmers, Vets, animal health workers, lab technicians with the right knowledge, skills and guidance, improvement in tick control has been seen, as well as better health conditions of the livestock.

During the monitoring visit, we discussed with the project stakeholders long-term sustainability of the project. Opinions were exchanged and we appreciated the valuable work done by the Project team, together with Kiboga District Veterinary Office in supporting target dairy farmers by demonstrating various disease control methods.

JICA will continues collaboration with partners in the bid to enhance capacity of tick management professionals and farmers to detect, prevent, prepare for and respond to tick-borne diseases in Uganda.

My name is Mukisa Emmanuel, a Conservation Educator at Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre. I am enjoying JICA’s Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP) on “Ecotourism for Officials on Nature Conservation” in Hokkaido, Japan.

Through exposure to different eco-tourism sites and programs conducted in Japan and powerful lectures facilitated by the most experienced tutors in the world, I have been able to see potential in almost every single wildlife habitat and life in my country while sharing some of our milestones and programs.

My stay here has not only added to my knowledge on conservation but also enabled me to benchmark and share knowledge and experience to enhance habitat protection and sustainable use of natural resources. There are a lot of similarities between Uganda and Japan to mention but a few, such as the respect for the crested crane as a national treasure, beautiful wetlands, hospitality of citizens, respect for all mankind among others. Therefore, there is a lot to learn and implement with enough case studies and literature.

My highlighted activity was the kayaking experience on Lake “Shikaribetsu,” which is sacred by local people and welcomes visitors with various and valuable eco-tourism activities.

Through a cooperation of "Promoting regional cooperation for African Grey Parrots Conservation in Uganda" among Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre(UWEC), 中部大学 Chubu University and JICA Uganda to nurse African Grey Parrots to full health.

The African Grey Parrot brainpower is legendary, their intelligence, great life-long companionship nature has led many to give into the temptation of domesticating them as pets or pleasure. This has fed a thriving illegal trade as a number of traffickers take many wild grey parrots from their habitat in the rainforests and sell them at a high price.

In April 2022, a joint operation by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and UWEC was undertaken in which a trafficker was captured with approximately 119 grey parrots stuffed in cages. The parrots were entrusted to the care of UWEC to be assessed and passed fit to be released back to the wild.

Often, the confiscated grey parrots are found in poor health condition because of confinement under unhealthy conditions and some usually suffer from deteriorating health, hence a hasty response was taken which led to the construction of a rescue cage for the grey parrots to fly with ease as they underwent rehabilitation.

In June 2023, UWA managed to release into the wild of Kibale national park 58 of the 119 grey parrots that were initially captured from a trafficker. The assessed grey parrots have numbered rings on their legs for monitoring purposes in the wild.

JICA commends UWA and UWEC for the ongoing efforts to save endangered birds and will continue working towards creating more awareness about the importance of saving the African grey parrots.

Hey,
I am Lunkuse Josephine, a master's student from Uganda at International University of Japan.
I have been studying in Japan since last September under the JICA's master's degree and Internship Program of African Business Education Initiative for Youth (ABE Initiative). Recently, I visited Sado Island for a study tour; the island is located in Niigata Prefecture in the Sea of Japan, and is known for its promoting Tourism, Agriculture and an ancient Gold Mine.
This trip was fully organized by JICA, and I really enjoyed the breath-taking journey. One of the most interesting parts of Sado Island is its respect and habitat protection of the Toki (Japanese Crested Ibis); for instance, many farmers utilize pesticide as little as possible to protect the Toki. This shows a patriotic character exhibited by the people of Sado, and the bird is Sado Identity. During the tour, I had a first- time experience of the Onsen, a Japanese hot spring meant for relaxation and rejuvenation. And I came across was the unique Japanese food, such as crabs and oysters, which were really tasty and a nice experience.
During the trip, we had a sight visit to Saito Farm, a paddy rice farmer, who is so passionate about rice growing and Toki. In his farm, they are growing different types of rice in one specific field in an artistic way to show a bird, a frog and rice bowl. It was interesting to know how zealous the people of Sado are about their way of agriculture; for them it is beyond income, and it is a passion.
We also visited Obata Sake Brewery, which is a former elementary School and has been transformed 5th generation brewery. We were taken through the process of brewing right from the rice plantations to packaging. This place trains people at a cost in Sake Brewing. It was nice to know how Japanese traditional rice wine is produced. Honestly, I enjoyed this trip so much.
My take home from this trip was the activity blending possibility and patriotism exhibited by the Sado people. The successful blending of Agro tourism and a gold mine in one prefecture without having only one area of concentration was an amazement that we need to share with our people in Uganda.

Thank you JICA Uganda for this lifetime experience!

JICA PRiDe Project Phase II Completes JOCV regional training 2023 in Uganda

10 participants from 4 countries attended actively the Rice Training Course in Uganda for JOCVs and Counterparts organized by PRiDe project Ⅱ Promotion of Rice Development & National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) under Coalition for African Rice Development (CARD). All participants were very eager to learn in the lectures and participated in many field practices provided during the training course.
At the end of the training, each participant created an action plan according to the issues related to rice cultivation in their countries. Many spoke positively about the 1 week training course, saying the lecturers were very helpful for them, and they were able to earn the basic skills needed to start up a paddy field and understood the rice market through the market surveys. In many participants’ countries, they use random planting method instead of line planting, and do not know how to cultivate rice where the area is a slope.
Thus, the practices in the rice fields were eye-opening to some participants so that they can bring the skills back to their countries and share them with local farmers. Moreover, the participants asked the cost of machines and tools because they wanted to find out if it is possible to use or make some tools instead considering the budget problems they face.
The Project will continue providing various trainings to meet trainees’ needs. PRiDe II believes that training participants gain beneficial knowledge and skills on improved rice cultivation so that they could practically utilize them in their home countries and contribute to increase rice production through the whole African region.

Gyebale ko,

I am Morita Maiko, a volunteer in Agricultural Community Development. Together with my counterpart, I am focusing on supporting farmers. We rent out Agricultural tools and have a seed bank, in addition to conducting trainings and workshops on better rice cultivation techniques using a demonstration garden.
I love travelling to experience new things. Coming to Uganda, I hoped to experience the food and culture and I love the experience.
