[01/11/21]   Natural Hair Porosity

Hello Naturalistas!

Today we are going to talk about basics about our Hair!

What is hair?
Hair is the protein filament that grows from follicles on our scalp. Hair is made up of 90% protein. Itโ€™s important for every naturalista to know the thickness, density and porosity of their hair, which helps us understand our hair better.

Hair thickness: refers to the diameter of each hair strand. Hair can be categorized as fine, medium or thick.

Hair density: refers to the number of hair strands a person has on their scalp. The higher the density the more hair strands and the less the hair strands the lower the density.

Hair pattern: refers to the way a hair strand looks like; it might be curly, kinky or coily. Black people have oval hair follicles which makes our hair come out of the scalp in various styles. One might have all three hair types or only two types. It is rare to have one pattern on your scalp.

Hair Porosity: refers to how well hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. Understanding our hair porosity will help us take good care of it hence healthy hair that will eventually retain length when cared for consistently and properly.

There are three hair porosity types:
1. Low Porosity Hair has cuticles that are tightly closed. It is very healthy hair which lacks proper moisturization hence its very dry, tangled and breaks easily. This type of hair needs to be washed, moisturized and deep conditioned weekly with once a month protein deep treatment. One important thing to remember is that low porosity hair is protein sensitive.

2. Normal Porosity Hair has cuticles that are loosely closed. It is the easiest type of hair to maintain; due to its loosely closed cuticles moisture penetrates easily and its held in longer. Weekly moisturizing, deep treatments and once a month protein deep treatments are great for normal porosity hair.

3. High Porosity Hair has cuticles that are raised/open. It is very dry, frizzy and breaks easily due to its raised cuticles. Moisture gets in and out very fast because the protein/cuticle structure is damaged by either chemical treatments, hair coloring, heat treatments, tight braiding or prolonged exposure to the sun. High porosity hair lacks shine, luster, protein and moisture; it requires a lot of attention. High porosity hair needs more protein and moisture. It is best to have weekly protein and moisture deep treatments for the first 6 weeks until the hair heals. This type of hair will do well with a deep protein treatment, once every two weeks with weekly moisture retention deep treatments thereafter.

To test for hair porosity: cleanse your hair with shampoo, pick a strand of your shedded hair (the one with a little white bulb at the end), and drop it in a glass of warm water; if the hair follicle floats (low porosity), if it sinks mid-way (normal porosity) and if it sinks to the bottom (high porosity).

Now from this brief discussion can you determine what your hair thickness, density, pattern and porosity are?

Feel free to ask questions on this topic or share with us your experiences.

Have a blessed week!
