PostBank donates iron sheets towards reconstruction of the recently burnt Elegu market.
Catherine Nabukwasi, Gulu Branch Manager handed over the items in the presence of John Kovuki, Elegu LC3 Chairman & Ag. Town Clerk.
The gruesome fire is reported to have destroyed property worth millions, stifling business. In his speech, John Kovuki noted that several traders lost cash in the fire that gutted the market saying, “Most traders have been keeping money in their shops.”
Elegu, is also a growing business hub on the border of Uganda and South Sudan but people have to move to Gulu City which is 130 kilometers away or to Adjumani District to access financial services.
The bank therefore officially designated a mobile van (bank on the wheels) that will make weekly stops in Elegu town to extend affordable financial services to the traders & enable them to ably transact like they would in a traditional bank setting.
“We pride ourselves in extending sustainable financial services to Ugandans. In addition to our mobile banking channels; PostMobile - *263#, PostApp, & ATMs, we have set up over 400 PostAgents countrywide to enable our customers transact with ease” Nabukwasi said.
The LC3 chairman called upon more entities and well-wishers to weigh in and support the reconstruction of the market.

We are excited to be in Lira conducting Financial Literacy trainings for Small and Medium sized businesses in partnership with the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce (UNCCI).
SMEs have better access to financial services such as credit, capital financing, etc, when they are banked under formal institutions. Our belief is that when we empower them with financial knowledge and skills, as well as access to convenient and affordable banking services, they have a chance to survive hard times, grow, and expand.
In attendance of the trainings was our Lira Branch Manager, Stephen Luwaga, the Mayor for Lira City, Sam Atul, the CEO at Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Thomas Eregu and at least 100 members from the business community in Lira.
Thanks to the community and our partners who made it possible and worthwhile.
