You can't make it in farming without passion, supervision and determination.
On Friday morning, our director travelled to his blossoming farm in Kakumiro. By 9am, he was already at the farm burning fats. You can't just leave it to the workers lest you get disappointed.
Weekend well spent!

Youth embrace coffee farming
There's a lot of an uninformed talk that youth aren't interested in farming. Fact is that while some are not interested in farming, many more are joining farming. For example, majority of my customers are people below the age of 35. Last week, I supplied plantlets that can plant 6 acres to a young man in his 20s. His future is surely secured. If you have idle land, coffee remains the thing.

End of Year Message
I am associated with two blossoming companies; Spotlight Publications Ltd, whose flagship brand is Business Focus (www.businessfocus.co.ug) and Pearl Model Farm & Agni-Consult Ltd. I must say I have had a challenging but equally rewarding year.
For Business Focus, I highly believe we have tried our best in simplifying money matters and unearthing investment opportunities to our readers.
Under the banking category, we have simplified banking and finance reporting. In terms of analysis of banks performance, we are now a reference point.
Our agribusiness and Entrepreneurship categories have inspired many in various ways (going by the feedback we get). To our readers, advertisers and partners, I say thank you for trusting us. What do we have in store in 2022? I can only say we promise to do better than 2021. We’ll continue demystifying the notion that “business news/reporting bores”.
For five years now, you have shown us that good business/ development journalism is equally rewarding. Watch the space!
For Pearl Model Farm, I must say we have inspired many people into farming. Many Ugandans including those abroad have embraced coffee farming because of our constant messages. It’s always important not to put all your eggs in one basket. 2022 should be a year for you to diversify into farming.
There are so many farming enterprises you can invest into. If you have land, coffee is one of the enterprises where you can’t go wrong. For those planning to join coffee farming, preparations for the next planting season are already underway.
For consultancy and quality coffee planting materials, we are available to serve you.
In 2022, I promise we’ll surprise you with so many innovations that will also benefit you.
I would also like to encourage you to write down your 2022 plans and how you’ll execute them. Have timelines. It helps you track your progress.
I wish you God's blessings and a fruitful 2022.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Focus on yields per tree and you'll thank me soon. If you have old unproductive or under productive coffee trees, stump them. They will be yielding highly in two years. #CoffeeIsTheThing
Gov’t MUST Intervene in Fight Against Black Coffee Twig Borer
I was in Kakumiro district over the weekend. I squeezed some time to visit a few farmers.
I observed that the Black Twig Borer is widely spread in the district. In fact, it is devastating almost all Robusta coffee growing areas in the country.
The main challenge in fighting this pest is that many smallholder farmers seem not interested in spending on pesticides and fungicides. They say the pesticides and fungicides are expensive. Now, if commercial/ serious farmers spray or take efforts to fight the pest, it may not make much sense if smallholder farmers who are neighbours to commercial farmers don’t act (the pest will keep returning to the commercial farmer).
This calls for UCDA/ government intervention. Since coffee is a top foreign exchange earner for Uganda and employs millions of Ugandans (over 1.7m households are into coffee farming), Government should carry out aerial/ drone spraying in affected areas across the country or help farmers get pesticides and fungicides at subsidized prices.
I see our production not increasing to the desired levels if the Twig Borer isn't dealt with decisively.Unfortunately, I haven’t seen political leaders such as MPs raise this issue as a matter of national importance! The good news is that I have reached out to the concerned Government agencies and they have promised to act. Am I not more useful than your MP? (for jokes please) I will find time this week to write/talk about the Coffee Wilt Disease which remains a big threat.

Coffee is the thing
A critical look at the global outlook of the coffee market will give you one conclusion; coffee is the thing.
Climate change has hit hard leading producers Brazil. Vietnam and Colombia have all been affected in various ways. Global coffee consumption is rising on increasing population, urbanization and incomes but production faces immense risks. While climate change is before us, we can still beat it. We still get enough rains. There are so many water conservation measures in addition to irrigation (which is quite expensive for many). Coffee prices are expected to get higher in coming years. Right now a kilo of kiboko (dry Robusta cherries) is between Shs2500 and Shs3000.
If you have idle land (two acres plus), I would advise you to plant coffee. For Ugandans in Diaspora who have taken on coffee farming because of my messages, thank you so much. You'll soon reap big.
Note: We are now receiving bookings for plantlets (KR1-7) for next season. We have quality plantlets at Shs1500 and Shs2000 depending on size of pots used. For bigger pots, we do them on order. We stop taking these orders (for bigger pots) on 15th December 2021 (for the first season of 2022).

Farming has so many challenges but we must keep walking!
Just a week after reporting for work, a worker at my nascent farm stole beddings, food and 100kgs of beans. We can't trace this thug. That said, this promising coffee is set to flower in the next one month. But most importantly, with good care, Clonal Coffee will keep flowering throughout the year.

Coffee in the land of milk
I spent the entire weekend in Kazo district (part of Ankole) on the invitation of a top commercial farmer in animal husbandry. They're diversifying into coffee. They have already planted a few. I gave them guidance on how to get best results. We agreed to walk this journey together. Coffee business is now in the land of milk (more farmers in tge region are taking on coffee farming). In districts like Kazo, coffee hasn't been the thing. Uganda will surely become world's third largest producer of coffee. I also learnt valuable lessons on animal husbandry.

Shade Trees in Coffee
Someone recently asked me whether he could plant a few eucalyptus trees in his coffee! It’s definitely not recommended as eucalyptus will out compete coffee in as far as feeding (water/nutrition) is concerned.
This brings me to the shade trees one should plant in coffee. Shade trees have many advantages but in summary, they are a climate change mitigation and adaptation measure.
Farmers should establish shade trees at least one year before coffee is planted out.
Shade trees should be planted in rows throughout the coffee garden and care should be taken to avoid too many shade trees as they may compete with coffee for moisture and nutrients in addition to over-shading the coffee trees.
It is recommended that the spacing of the shade trees be approximately 20-40m apart depending on the tree species and expected canopy profile.
Common shade trees include Ficus natalensis (Mutuba in Luganda, Emitooma in Runyoro-Rutooro), Albizia coriaria (Mugavu, Musisiya, Musisa) and Ficus mucuso (Mukunyu, Kabalira).
Trees like avocados, jackfruit and mangoes should be used as windbreakers.
Shade trees should be pruned at the beginning of the rainy season to avoid disease and pest development such as coffee leaf rust and black coffee twig borer. Keep the trees at a maximum height of 4-5m to facilitate easier management. Can one plant coffee before planting shade trees? Definitely YES.
As you come to buy quality coffee plantlets from me, bear the above priceless advice in mind.
