As we join the rest of the World to commemorate World Hepatitis Day tomorrow 28 July, remember that in Africa alone 91 million people are living with chronic hepatitis B of those over 1.8 million people are Ugandans unfortunately majority of these people do not know that they are living with hepatitis B which puts them at a risk of possible liver complications like liver cancer and also transmitting it unknowingly to others in their communities. This World Hepatitis Day We call upon all Ugandans to use this time to know their hepatitis B status.
We can't wait 🙌.

July 28 is World Hepatitis Day.The aim of WHD is to raise awareness about hepatitis and reevaluate WHO Member states progress on elimination targets. It's an important Day globally to appeal to local, national, regional and international leaders to appreciate the growing burden of hepatitis and act. With annual deaths of over 1.4 million people each year viral hepatitis can longer be ignored from being a public health issue. During the month of July we appeal to Ministry of Health- Uganda to speed up and approve the National Strategic Plan for Hepatitis B and C. The time is running until 2023. Welcoming Dr. Jean Kasaeya to Africa CDC and hoping his leadership will build on the already existing commitment of eliminating hepatitis on the region. I hope involvement of the communities and CSOs but more importantly advocating for introduction of hepatitis B birth dose in the region be key on his agenda for meeting the WHO targets but more importantly decolonizing public health agenda for the Global South.

It has been a busy week for our team holding frontline health workers capacity building mentorship and coaching in Kasese district with support from Gilead Sciences It is amazing how the health workers respond to participating in these training sessions which is evident that there is urgent need for equipping them with knowledge about hepatitis B and C management.

We must stop the transmission of hepatitis B to the next generation. We have had a preventive vaccine for over 30 years. WHO recommends that ALL babies start with a birth dose within 24 hours of birth of the hepatitis B vaccine and complete the series according to schedule.

Pregnant women must insist on being tested for hepatitis B early in pregnancy. If they are HBsAg positive, then they need to test for HBeAg or the viral load since tenofovir (TDF) could be needed during the last trimester of pregnancy.

It is crucial that the baby get the vaccine within 24 hours or less after. The pentavalent vaccine may be used to complete the hep B vaccine series. Check early! In some countries, there may be a fee for the hep B birth dose.
