Love is NOT an emotion. It is a choice and decision to practice certain attributes. One of the reasons marriages are failing is that people have confused emotions and desire for love.
It is interesting that none of the descriptors of love in 1 Cor 13:4-7 include emotions. Everything in there is a character attribute that one exercises by choice.

Isaac had never met his wife Rebecca BUT she was found for him by looking for a specific set of attributes.
I have met many a couple who have been decades in marriage and love each other deeply yet their marriages were arranged in the first place. They chose to love each other.

The Bible doesn't say a man falls in love with a wife.. It says a man "finds" a wife. Which means that he identifies certain attributes that he is looking for in a spouse and makes a conscious decision to love her. It is not some out of control emotion that takes over him..

That is lust and it is what Amnon had for his half sister Tamar.. and once he sated that desire.. he lost the entire feeling and even begun to loathe her. ( 2 Sam 13). It was based on nothing more than attraction and desire. Once it was satisfied, he didn't even want to look at her anymore.

Young people are getting married in a hurry because they are "burning" only to get in there, sate their desire and now find themselves stuck with someone they can't stand anymore because there was no solid character basis for growing in love.

Love is a "verb". It is a "doing word". It is beyond something you feel. Feelings change. They are transitional and based on events. Love is something you practise.
God so loved that he "gave" ( John 3:16).
Love gives generously of itself in kindness, patience, justice, politeness, humility, self control, etc.

That is why love is a "fruit" of the spirit ( Gal 5:22). Fruits are cultivated. They grow. They don't just appear full grown out of nowhere.
Today make a choice to love God. To love your spouse. To love your parents. To love your fellow believers in the faith.

The church is struggling today because people are coming to church expecting to "feel" God's love. They are looking for an emotional experience instead of a spiritual experience.
They want a mood based worship that leaves them with tears on their faces so they can say they felt his love.. God already demonstrated and proved his love in that while we were yet sinners he died for us.

Love is service ( Gal 5:13, Heb 10:24, Eph 4:2). Jesus put it simply.. If you love me, you will obey my commandments. ( John 14:15,21, 15:10). Nothing to do with emotions. Everything to do with obedience and service out of gratitude and commitment to him who loved us and gave himself for us.

Christ would not command us to love one another ( John 13:34, 15:12, 17, Rom 12:10, 13:8, 1 Pet 1:22, 1 John 3:11,23, 4:7,11,12, 2 John 1:5) if love was some emotion we had no control over.

And before you marry him or her out of heady emotions.. See if they actually manifest the true character of love.
