Countries need to enhance spiritual approaches to environmental conservation, putting Laudato si’ in practice would inspire “an integrated approach to combating poverty”, one which “protects nature” while at the same time “restoring dignity to the vulnerable poor ” LS (139).
Pope Francis argued that “integral human development,” or development which does not prioritise economic growth and technological progress above all else. While growth is important, the Holy Father said, we must ensure that it is promoted in tandem with other things of value, including the natural world, human culture, the poor and vulnerable, and animal life.
Pope Francis's encyclical Laudato Si' (2015) establishes that the environmental crisis and social injustice are a single, complex crisis. It argues that environmental protection and human dignity are inseparable; we cannot care for nature without defending the vulnerable poor, and we cannot protect human dignity without a healthy, sustainable environment.
