GOV’T DECLARES FRIDAY AS PUBLIC HOLIDAY TO MOURN POPE FRANCIS

The national government has declared Friday, 25th April 2025, as a National Public Holiday to mourn his holiness Pope Francis who died on Easter Monday.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Cabinet Minister Dr. Martin Elia Lomurö described his holiness pope Francis as a beacon of peace, compassion and humility whose moral leadership and unwavering advocacy for the poor, the marginalized and the voiceless inspired millions around the world including South Sudan.

The Minister said Pope Francis historic efforts for peace and reconciliation in our country including his unprecedented gesture of humility during the 2019 Vatican retreat where he kissed the feet of South Sudanese leaders, will remain etch in the hearts of our nation as a symbol of hope, healing and unity.

Clarification on the Status of Bilateral Representation Between the Republic of South Sudan and the United States of America

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan wishes to address recent misinformation circulating on social media regarding the status of diplomatic relations with the United States. Contrary to these unfounded claims, the Government of the Republic of South Sudan has neither expelled the United States Ambassador nor closed its Embassy in Washington, D.C.

These allegations did not originate from any official source within the Government and are entirely without merit. The U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan remains fully accredited and continues to enjoy the full support of our Government. In the spirit of continued cooperation, our newly appointed Minister, Honorable Monday Semaya K. Kumba, invited the U.S. Ambassador, H.E. Michael J. Adler, and met with him earlier this morning, to explore avenues for further strengthening the enduring relationship between our two nations.

The Ministry also takes this opportunity to reaffirm that the Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Washington, D.C. remains open and fully operational. We appreciate the ongoing support of the U.S. Government and remain committed to fostering strong and mutually beneficial diplomatic ties.

opposition faction removes Machar from -IO leadership, names Par interim chair

A faction within South Sudan’s main opposition party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), has named Stephen Par Kuol as interim chairman, replacing First Vice President Riek Machar, who remains under house arrest. The decision was made during a meeting held in Juba on Wednesday, which was not attended by senior SPLM-IO officials. Former Federal Affairs Minister Lasuba Wango was appointed deputy interim chairman, and Agok Makur interim secretary-general.

Key figures, including Interior Minister and Machar’s wife Angelina Teny, as well as SPLM-IO Secretary-General Regina Joseph Kaba, were absent from the meeting, which loyalists have dismissed as “illegitimate” and politically driven. In his address following the announcement, Par suspended Machar’s deputy, Oyet Nathaniel Pierino, who is currently in exile. “Someone who fled cannot run the affairs of the movement from Facebook,” Par said, adding that the SPLM-IO headquarters “remain in Juba, not online.”

The leadership dispute follows ongoing restrictions on Machar’s movement, which some describe as “politically motivated house arrest,” and comes amid delays in implementing the 2018 peace agreement that established the current Transitional Government of National Unity
