The Ssese islands are an archipelago of eighty four islands in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria in Uganda. The islands differ in mass from lesser than 2.5 acres to more than 40 kilometers of stretch for Bugala, the biggest isle and they are coterminous with the Kalangala District in southern Central Uganda, which don’t have any territory on mainland Uganda.
The tribe of the Bassese, a Bantu speaking kind of ethnic group that is not so different for the Basoga and Baganda in the rather distinct but similar language are the known inhabitants of these islands. Meanwhile monetary activities including logging, palm oil growing etc. are done on the island, fishing is the main economic activity carried out on the islands more specifically the gigantic Nile Perch that is mainly exported.
Primates are also some of the many animal species that are found on the islands and it is for this reason that tourists visit the islands. Seeing these beautiful creature like animal species is possible though hard to access via the mainland.
There are three major routes to use when getting to the islands; Nakiwogo close to Entebbe is the most famous of them all, using the MV Kalangala which is the major gateway to the islands. The other route could be one from Bukakata landmass that is 36km to the Eastern part of Masaka on a ferry. Finally, for those who would rather go for another option can go through Kisenyi Landing Site where little local boats made of wood will leave for Banda Island. I know it might a very long and hecktic journey, but when you get there, the hustle would definitely all be worth it.
