Landings and taking offs of airliners

The fastest passenger airplane in the world today is the Boeing 747-8i, also known as the 747-8 Intercontinental, with a top speed of Mach 0.86. However, it's worth noting that this speed is significantly slower than the supersonic passenger planes of the past, like the Tupolev Tu-144 and the Concorde, which could reach speeds of over Mach 2 ¹.
If you're curious about the top speeds of other passenger planes, here are a few examples:
- *Boeing 787 Dreamliner*: Mach 1 (776 mph)
- *Airbus A380*: Mach 0.96 (736 mph)
- *Boeing 777*: Mach 0.97 (745 mph)
Keep in mind that these speeds are based on the planes' maximum capabilities and may not reflect their typical cruising speeds ².

A man who was filmed by CNN being released by rebels from a Damascus jail was a former intelligence officer with the deposed Syrian regime, according to local residents, and not an ordinary citizen who had been imprisoned, as he had claimed.
CNN initially found the man while pursuing leads on the missing US journalist Austin Tice. In a video report, chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward and her team, accompanied by a rebel guard, came across a cell in a Damascus jail that was padlocked from the outside. The guard blew off the lock with a gun, and the man was found alone inside the cell, under a blanket.
When he emerged into the open air, the man appeared bewildered. Questioned by the rebel fighter who freed him, the man identified himself as Adel Ghurbal from the central Syrian city of Homs.
He claimed that he had been kept in a cell for three months, adding that it was the third prison where he had been confined. The man also said he was not aware that the Assad regime had fallen. He was being held in a jail that had been run by the Syrian air force’s intelligence services until the Assad regime collapsed.
A resident of the Bayada neighborhood in Homs gave CNN a photograph said to be of the same man while he was on duty, in what appears to be a government office. Facial recognition software provided a match of more than 99 percent with the man CNN met in the Damascus prison cell. The photograph shows him sitting at a desk, apparently in military clothing. CNN is not publishing the photo to protect the source’s anonymity.
An image obtained by CNN on Monday now points to the man’s real identity – said to be a lieutenant in the Assad regime’s Air Force Intelligence Directorate, Salama Mohammad Salama. CNN Africa

Gunfire was heard on Tuesday morning in Mali's capital, Bamako. An anonymous police source told AFP news agency that armed men attacked at least one military police base in the city. The source said the gunmen had not been officially identified. AFP said black smoke could be seen rising from an area near the airport. Mali state TV later reported that the situation was "under control." Marima Sagara, deputy director of the army's communications service, was cited by AP news agency as saying that a military training camp on the outskirts of Bamako had been attacked.

South Sudan is gearing up to restart oil production through its neighbor, Sudan. The main pipeline carrying oil from South Sudan through Sudan for export was halted in February because of damage stemming from a war between Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces. South Sudan President Salva Kiir's office said in a statement late on Monday that engineers from South Sudan are expected to visit Sudan in the coming weeks to familiarise themselves with the readiness of the facilities to jump-start production. The exports are a crucial source of revenue for South Sudan and Sudan takes a cut of the oil as a transit fee.

The former partner of Ugandan Olympian runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died in a Kenyan hospital, local media reported. The man is believed to have sustained severe burns during his alleged attack on the marathon runner.
Police said that Dickson Ndiema Marangach snuck into Cheptegei’s home on September 1 while she attended church with her two daughters.
When she returned, authorities said, “he poured the petrol and lit her on fire” in front of her children.
Cheptegei sustained burns to around 80% of her body and succumbed to her injuries four days after the September 1 attack.
Marangach, who suffered burns to around 30% of his body, died on Monday, said Daniel Lang’at, a spokesperson at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret in western Kenya, where Cheptegei was also treated and died.
