The first open-source curriculum for Tourism and Hospitality training in Africa. We aim to make relevant training materials freely accessible to anyone with an interest in preparing young people in Africa for a great career in the sector!
Operating as usual
What is the purpose of regular performance evaluations? ๐
๐ These are to help remind students what their managers expect in the workplace.
๐ It also allows students to provide input and feedback on how they feel about their internship and position within the organization and what the future holds for them.
๐ Finally, it also provides employers with information to use when making employment decisions such as promotions, pay increases, job description changes and selecting the employee of the month.
SUCCESS STORY ๐
Mabamba Shoebill Tours & Bird Watching provides local bird watching packages in Uganda. The shoebill does certainly attract most of the watchers coming to the country.
Before the Ukarimu training, they used to rely only on walk-ins but now because of Tripesa their clients can access them from anywhere in the world.
The company now relies on Tripesa for its website, payments, bookings, and most tourism operations.

In June 2022, under the newly established Elgon Tourism Academy, 20 participants were onboarded for the training, and a total of 14 tourism businesses from the districts of Kapchorwa, Mbale, Kotido, and Moroto were represented.
Congratulations to the participants who completed the Ukarimu training and graduated after the assessment. We hope that you will continue to develop and grow in your career! ๐ฅณ
One of the graduates, Paul Kipyeko, a site guide with Kapchorwa Safaris, confessed that during the training, felt pushed to go further than he had ever expected. He said that Ukarimu gave him the opportunity to use his potential in tourism, for example, by developing his own tourism products and working hard to sell them profitably.

Throughout Africa, many young people are looking for jobs, but most tourism companies still struggle to find the right staff! Why is that?
We believe this is caused by a mismatch between what is needed on the work floor and what is offered by training providers. Or more importantly: how it is offered.
At Ukarimu, we want to solve just that! Instead of favoring a โchalk-and-talkโ approach, we believe that training for the tourism & hospitality sector should be as practical as possible. โ

The hospitality industry is competitive, and businesses need to keep up with the latest trends to avoid being left behind.
Additionally, keeping pace with the industry as a whole is a great way to ensure your business delivers the kind of customer experience people want and expect.
The proprietor of Kikorongo Safari Lodge, Nyombi Thembo, shares with us in this video how much the needs and priorities of his customers have changed since the pandemic.

Who are the trainers of Ukarimu? ๐ค
Ukarimu works together with trainers at training institutions. In order to implement the curriculum successfully, the trainers are advised to go through a Training of Trainers, which is organized occasionally.
These trainers are also helped remotely by the Ukarimu developers in implementing the training.
After a couple of years, we noticed that the ideal Ukarimu trainer is a good listener, rather than a talker. A facilitator, rather than an instructor. An experienced tourism professional, rather than an experienced teacher. ๐

An update on our Female Tour Guide trainees!
After an intense theoretical and practical guide training, the Female Tour Guides to-be are now gaining experience in the field. They are on mentored internships with Matoke Tours and various other tour operators within Uganda who support our program, joining seasoned tour guides on tours to learn from the best and interact with travelers.
The internships will end next month, whereafter the trainees shall complete their training. After the training the women will have all the needed tools to further develop their skills as tour guides, as a kick-start for their careers.
Congratulations to our trainees for the just-concluded second phase of training. After 3 months of internship, we are excited to see what comes next for you! ๐
Exchange programs will get the trainees out of their comfort zone so they not only experience enhanced learning but also personal growth.
What is the relevance of exposure trips during the training of female tour guides?
Exposure trips are one of the best tools that we have used to provide female tour guides with real-world experiences. Each experience that a guide participates in contributes to her understanding of the world.
They begin to see that what they learnt during the classroom training can help them solve the problems they see in the world around them and can have a direct impact on who they become as guides.
Additionally, this shared social experience provides the opportunity for the guides to get familiar with the tourist attractions, routes and how to interpret the meanings of different attractions in an authentic setting.
