As with all good things, the 2026 COSECSA-UGHE Surgical Research Methods Workshop also came to an end bringing to a close what has been such an engaging week with lots to learn and experiences to build up on.
The final day was fittingly dedicated to getting research output out into the World. The day kicked off with a session on manuscript writing and the publication process, and thereafter sessions on how to choose the right journal, understanding what reviewers are really looking for, and abstract writing for conferences. The sessions today were very practical, career-shaping and ones that every early career researcher in the room needed to hear.
Two final participants presented their proposals to close out the presentations for the week, and the post-evaluation forms went out to all participants, to ensure that lessons learnt from this week's engagements are incorporated into future planning.
To everyone who facilitated, presented, and showed up fully every single day thank you!
To the participants, the work you've put in this week is the foundation of the surgical research that this region needs. Now go and write... And don't forget to publish and disseminate your work!
Last but not least a huge gratitude to the Intuitive Foundation for supporting the implementation of this workshop, and to the University of Global Health Equity for Co-creating and Co-delivering such a wonderful workshop with COSECSA. Huge gratitude to the COSECSA leadership and Secretariat for making all efforts to make this possible!
We look forward to the 2027 circa!

We have just concluded Day 4 of the Intuitive Foundation funded COSECSA-UGHE Surgical Research Methods Workshop in Kigali and the energy in the room remains high as we continue to celebrate Global Surgery Week.
Today's sessions focused largely on linear regression analysis, breaking down the components of a research proposal, and a very important discussion on ethical considerations in research — a reminder that good science is not just about the methods but also about responsibility to our patients and study participants.
In the afternoon, four participants then presented their proposals to the panel and got constructive feedback,
4 down, one more to go, excited to wrap up such an impactful workshop tomorrow!

Day 3 of the Intuitive Foundation funded COSECSA-UGHE Surgical Research Methods Workshop in Kigali was a success and kept the momentum going as we continue to celebrate the Global Surgery week.
The day opened with a powerful session on surgical research delivered by the COSECSA Secretary General Professor Abebe Bekele, setting the tone for what followed. The rest of the day was heavily statistics related and featured hands-on training in statistical software and covering several statistical tests and their use case scenarios such as ANOVA, t-tests and the role of confidence intervals in interpreting findings. The sessions also covered correlation and regression analysis.
To close the day off, five participants presented their research proposals to the panel, and consequent to the impactful sessions participants are exposed to, the quality of work on display continues to impress.
Three down and two more days to to go.

The Intuitive Foundation funded COSECSA-UGHE Surgical Research Methodology Workshop successfully completes Day 2!
Today's sessions featured key foundational topics such as framing a research question and the anatomy of a research protocol and was followed by sessions on random errors, bias and confounding factors, paving way for an introduction to data analysis, and statistical tests.
The afternoon brought a deep dive into systematic review and meta-analysis, and to close the day, four participants stepped up to present their research proposals and received critical appraisal feedback from other participants and from faculty as well.
Three more days to go, with more learning opportunities to expect even as we continue to celebrate Global Surgery week!
