實際上的意思是「秘密地；私下地」。

古羅馬神話中，
戰神瑪爾斯 (Mars) 和美神維納斯 (Venus)
偷情生下了愛神邱比特 (Cupid)，
邱比特為了維護母親的名聲，
送了一束玫瑰花給沉默之神 Harpocrates，
請祂保守秘密。
羅馬人因此將玫瑰花
當作沉默或保守祕密的象徵，
去別人家作客時
若看到桌子上繪有玫瑰花，
就表示在這張桌子上談的事情不能外傳。
