🥫 Promoting English-Labelled Food Products in Tuvalu 🇹🇻
✅ Why English Labelling Matters
Under Section 3(2) of Tuvalu’s Food Safety Act (CAP. 28.08, 2022 Revised Edition, Page 7), all packaged food must carry labels in English or Tuvaluan. This ensures that consumers can clearly understand what they are buying and eating.

🌍 Benefits of English Labelling
• Consumer Safety: Clear labels help prevent accidental consumption of unsafe or expired products.
• Transparency: Ingredients, expiration dates, and manufacturer details are easily understood.
• Fair Trade: English labelling supports fair trading practices by reducing misleading or deceptive packaging.
• Global Standards: English is widely recognized internationally, making Tuvalu’s food products more competitive abroad.

📖🧐 What Consumers Should Look For
When buying food products, check that the label includes:
• Product name and nature
• List of ingredients
• Net weight or volume
• Manufacturer/importer details
• Expiration or “best before” date

⚖️ Legal Reminder
Selling food without proper English or Tuvaluan labelling is an offence under Section 12 (Page 10) of the Food Safety Act, punishable by fines. Compliance protects both businesses and consumers.

🌱 Takeaway Message
English-labelled food products = safer choices, informed consumers, and stronger trade for Tuvalu.
Let’s support businesses that comply with the law and protect public health.

🍞🥫 Know Your Rights & Responsibilities Under the Food Safety Act! 🇹🇻

When buying food from shops, canteens or stalls, remember these important points 👇

✅ Your Rights:
• You have the right to buy safe, clean, and properly labelled food.
• Labels must be clear and in English, so you can understand what you’re buying.
• If food is labelled only in another language and you can’t understand it — that food should not be sold until it’s properly labelled in English.
• You can report unsafe, spoiled, or wrongly labelled food to the Environment Health Department under the Public Health Unit, in the Ministry of Health Social Welfare and Public Health Unit of Tuvalu.

✅ Your Responsibilities:
• Check labels and expiry dates before buying.
• Avoid food with damaged packaging or unclear labels.
• Keep receipts or proof of purchase — this helps if you need to report a problem.
• Report unsafe food or poor hygiene practices in shops, restaurants, or food stalls to protect your family and community.

🛡️ Together, we can make sure food sold in Tuvalu is safe and clearly labelled for everyone.

✨️Food Safety vs. Food Quality - What's the Difference?

✨️Two terms are often used interchangeably but they mean very different things: Food Safety and Food Quality.

✨️Food Safety ensures that food is free from hazards (physical, chemical, or microbiological) and safe for consumption. It focuses on preventing risks that could harm consumers. Think Use By Date (or Expiry date ) = Safety.

✨️Food Quality, on the other hand, is about the sensory attributes - taste, texture, appearance, crunchiness, flavor, and nutrition. It ensures the food is pleasant, appealing, and nutritious. Think Best Before (BB) Date = Quality.

While food safety protects consumers from harm, food quality drives satisfaction, trust, and loyalty. Both must work hand in hand to ensure not just safe food, but also food people enjoy and return to.What do you prioritize more in your daily food choices safety or quality?
