"In order to accept payments on an iPhone today, merchants need to use payment terminals that plug in or communicate with the phone via Bluetooth. The upcoming feature will instead turn the iPhone into a payment terminal, letting users such as food trucks and hair stylists accept payments with the tap of a credit card or another iPhone onto the back of their device.

The move could impact payments providers that rely on Apple’s iPhones to facilitate sales, such as Block Inc.’s Square, which dominates the market. If Apple lets any app use the new technology, then Square can continue accepting payments via Apple devices without needing to worry about providing its own hardware. If Apple requires merchants to use Apple Pay or its own payment processing system, that could compete directly with Square."

"The sovereign’s credit rating was cut to B2 from B1 on Friday, putting it on par with Egypt, Jamaica and Rwanda. The company kept a negative outlook on the country, saying fiscal metrics could deteriorate faster than currently expected.

“Turkey’s external vulnerabilities are increasingly likely to crystallise in a balance of payments crisis,” Moody’s analysts Sarah Carlson and Yves Lemay wrote in the announcement. “As the risks to Turkey’s credit profile increase, the country’s institutions appear to be unwilling or unable to effectively address these challenges.”"

Turkey Downgraded By Moody’s as Buffers Slide, Risks Pile Up Moody’s Investors Service downgraded Turkey’s debt rating citing an increase in the nation’s external vulnerabilities along with eroding fiscal buffers and institutional challenges.

"Few would disagree that controversial measures to shield the lira have meant a de facto departure from Turkey’s floating exchange rate regime over the past year. Foreign exchange rates have been regulated — or, rather, suppressed — through veiled interventions by the central bank. To keep the lira below six against the dollar, the central bank has often funneled foreign exchange to the market via state banks, using money that it could have kept as reserves. Such moves amount to political manipulation of foreign exchange prices, given the tight control the government has attained over the central bank since last year.

In a fresh step to that effect, the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) announced Feb. 9 new limits to foreign exchange transactions. The agency cut the limit for Turkish banks’ forex swap, spot and forward transactions with foreign entities to 10% of a bank’s equity, a move that effectively aims to curtail transactions that could raise hard currency prices. The limit had already been halved to 25% in August 2018, when the currency crisis hit."

Fresh currency fears loom over Turkey Despite a series of unconventional measures to keep hard currency prices in check, Turkey appears headed for fresh currency turmoil.

"A key obstacle has been a lack of appetite by both the debt-laden companies and their lenders to take drastic measures to restructure the debt, in part because of hope that the economy will soon rebound and improve business. There has also been scant direction from Ankara, the people say.
