Pangolin capture and release
Today l got a call from my son telling me a local had caught a pangolin in a rubber garden close by, the rubber tapper wanted 1000Bht/Kg and this beautiful creature which weighed 3.8Kg
It’s always difficult in these situations to know what the right thing to do is - perpetuate the trade and buy the animal for release or turn a blind eye and leave it to a horrible fate. I couldn’t afford to spend 3800bht on the animal but through negotiation and appealing for its safety l bought it for 2500 Bht which was my limit.
Nim kept it a dark cage throughout the day and Jonathan came over late afternoon for the release just before dusk at a secluded mountain area not too far from where it was captured.
As you can see it made its escape looking no worse for its experience.
Thanks Nim and Johnathon for taking care of this beautiful little pangolin (in my absence)and giving it a chance to live and avoid being transported to China / Malaysia for a miserable fate
By the way if this kind of thing happens again ( it’s very infrequent thankfully)
Is there anyone who would like to help with, buying the animals freedom - put your hand up - l felt very bad about setting a limit on this little fella but it ended well

Great to see this shiver..at Maya
We proud to offer free range duck eggs
Price 6Bht per each =180bht/ tray of 30 eggs
Our eggs have big red yokes and average 65-75gm. We bought a tray of duck eggs from a big supermarket to compare and found they weighed 62gm on average and didnt have the same colour
Our ducks are locked up at night and free range around the gardens and ponds through the day.
The Thai locals love our eggs and easy to sell
Great day for kayaking this is our long term guests from Kaiyum Retreat - they are from Pattaya and are retreating from the prevailing CV19 curse
Wow - the first of the season mangosteens are ready and delicious
Lucky to have a couple of agile locals to pick the first 3kg
Nim wanted to sell sell ( 100 bht / kg) but they didn’t make it past the front gate
Breakfast on fire under the Red Jade Vine consisting of our own
* Oganic duck eggs
* Coconuts which made the beef coconut curry (more fire)
* Whole meal bread ( practice makes perfect)
With mangosteen tree in background - more about that shortly...
Ragum and Numwa bananas today
Love Thai fruits
Otters like cat food too, but Goldie prefers social distance plus you never know who you will find in your cupboard here...
Little Fai still loves her milk but we are so happy to see she is starting to eat solids after months of bottle feeding, multiple times a day
Jackfruit - so much flesh from one fruit - it’s heavy - hurry up Nim said
“Sai” and pup “Fai” having fun in the garden

ecovilla krabi
I went to the Krabi Tessabarn tip today in Sai Tai ( back of Makro on Hwy 4) for the first time - it was quite a mission as some of the minor roads marked in Google Earth are now non existent
The main point of this post however is to advertise extent of the dog pack that lives there and their plight. I was shocked to see more than 50 dogs roaming around scrounging vainly for food. Many of them were friendly and after a good bath would be very presentable.
I spoke to the lady at the weigh station about the dogs and she said there is an employee who feeds them occasionally but no-one cares for them all. However there is a significant dynamic that is effecting the dogs currently and that is the Krabi Tessabarn tip has recently stopped taking household rubbish and now only takes solid waste Ie cement rubble; steel ceramic; earth back fill etc - l was turned back initially and directed to the ACE incinerator complex 1 km back along the road. So the dogs no longer can scrounge in the house hold rubbish for food waste because that now goes directly to the ACE incinerator, as it is classed as burnable
The Krabi Tessabarn tip is in the process of turning the tip site into a scenic site and a large water catchment / dam is close to completion l feel very sorry for the dogs and was able to make contact with a few of them but the large No’s of them is shocking.. Never seen anything like it..
For clarity
The Tessabarn tip takes only hard waste in my case 1/2 ute load 220 kg = 103bht
The ACE incinerator complex nearby only takes burnable waste 20-30 kgs = 8 bht
We have so many mangoes and bananas at the moment. Nim is sun drying them, the process is simple, peel them and then soak in a bowel of water with 1 tbl of salt added, for 5 min. Then spread the fruit out in the sun, the mangoes (sliced) take 3 days to dry while the bananas (whole) take 7 days. We don’t have a dehydrator machine so the fruit being processed is put into the fridge overnight.
Lastnight we camp at the local mountain top ..two km away it overlooks Ecovilla and Klong Tarntip valley...we woke up to a cowd of sightseeing shoolgirls who were up very early for sunrise
Simone and Luca stayed with us for three months
This was our goodbye dinner celebration. Safe travels Simone and Luca - hope to see you in Khaothong again
