WEAVE, a Fair Trade Enterprise that create style, partnership and hope for the future
Conflict and displacement has wrought havoc to the lives of refugees and marginalized people causing human suffering. They forcibly leave everything behind including their most precious possessions and livelihoods. And when they arrived in Thailand, women in particular are faced with the incredible tasks of providing for themselves and for their families. Finding economic and employment opportunities are extremely scarce. Prolonged refugee confinement and massive poverty exacerbates this situation. Addressing such requires alternative sustained and long-term solutions to enable economic self-reliance, resiliency and sustainable future. WEAVE’s Fair Trade Enterprise, support refugee and marginalized women artisans to harness their traditional hand-loom skills to co-create handmade products that blends contemporary with time-honored ethnic inspired designs for overseas market, contributing to the global handicrafts economy. This generates safe and gainful employment and enabling self-reliance and resiliency of women artisans while ensuring that their cultural tradition thrive.
WEAVE’s emphasis on Fair Trade leads to the creation of economic, social and environmental value in its approach to providing alternatives in addressing social ills. It facilitates access and opportunities for women artisans to acquire business acumen while maintaining their cultural and traditional skills; increase connectivity to retailers, buyers and consumers, opportunities for creative expression while earning safe and fair income. Meanwhile, its focus on women’s economic empowerment is geared towards equipping refugee and marginalized women with relevant and appropriate skills required to combat poverty, address gender discrimination and in achieving economic self-sufficiency.
Each weave product is individually crafted by utilizing traditional back strap weaving, hand-embroidery and hand stitching taking great care and respect all through-out the entire production process. Local raw materials are ethically, responsibly and sustainable sourced under Fair Trade conditions. The products are tangible expressions and celebration of refugee's skills and creativity. The company takes its acronym from the back-strap loom weaving for which the Karen and Karenni women are known of as well as its focus to empower indigenous women.
The clientele of WEAVE Fair Trade Enterprise are socially-conscious consumers who understand the power of their purchases - to make positive impact on people and the planet. They make conscious actions to support not only the beautiful WEAVE products but also the producers behind their purchases and in contributing to the change process.
