This water whistle vessel has a resonant head that creates two different tones depending on the intensity of the movement while performing this instrument.

What is a sounding mask?

The simple concept would be that it is a mask + a sound system of a globular flute or “ocarina”.
This series of workshops are led by “Ceremonial Pacha” to introduce the Pre-Colombian sound ceramics.

In this class on “sounding masks” we will learn basic knowledge about the handling of clay, as well as some clay sculpture techniques, and of course, we will learn about the construction of a globular flute or “ocarina”.

No prior knowledge or experience is needed for this class, so all who are curious and want to explore new creative venues are welcome.

The vessel produces a short, loud tone, and depending on the intensity of movement while playing, it can create two distinct tones: one low and one higher. In pre-Columbian cultures, there was a messenger named the “Chasqui” whose job was to deliver important information from one society to another. This meant they had to walk hundreds of kilometers to pass on the message.

In this workshop we will address this interesting topic and also relate it to the cacao plant medicine. We will analyze the relationship between sound and cacao as a medicinal method.
