Rik Gadella was born in Aruba, in the Caribbean, in 1964. After studying philosophy, he established in Amsterdam a publishing house and gallery called Picaron Editions, devoted to works of philosophy, poetry and art. In 1992 he moved to Paris where he created the internationally renowned art fairs Paris Photo, ArtistBook International, and Parcours des Mondes. In 2007, he visited Laos, and had a revelation.
“Who would have thought that a week’s stay in Laos would have turned my life around so much that I’d end up moving to the other side of the world, into a country and a culture that I knew nothing about, to launch myself on a completely new path and a huge adventure. Here I am in Luang Prabang, one of the most fascinating places on earth. And, I also have the privilege of working with amazing people on the discovering and classifying of an exceptional flora for the creation of the first botanical garden in Laos.”
Thus the project to create the first botanical garden of Laos took shape in 2008 and opened to the general public in 2017 showing the flora of Laos with a special focus on ethno-botany.

Dr. Katie Richgels
Institute : National Wildlife Health Center, USGS, U.S.A.
Topic : Biodiversity loss linked to emerging wildlife diseases
Katie Richgels is the Chief of the Applied Wildlife Health Research Branch at the USGS National
Wildlife Health Center. In this role, she oversees research on the risks, impacts, and mitigations
strategies for wildlife diseases that are important for human health, agricultural health, or
conservation in the United States. Currently, the research branch is developing new diagnostic tests,
such as bed-side lateral flow tests to detect an invasive fish tapeworm, and new assays to detect
chronic wasting disease in live cervids. In addition, the branch is studying the epidemiology of
important wildlife diseases, such as sylvatic plague, avian influenza, and white nose syndrome.
Lastly, the branch develops management tools that can help mitigate disease effects, such as field
applicable vaccines targeted at wildlife hosts and disease forecasts that allow managers to improve
efficiency and effectiveness of management actions.
Dr. Richgels is a broadly trained disease ecologist with a background in metacommunity and spatial
ecology, GIS, and epidemiology. She completed post-doctoral training at the USGS National Wildlife
Health Center on modeling vaccination strategies for management of sylvatic plague in western
prairie dog populations and completing a nation-wide risk assessment for the emerging fungal
pathogen, Bsal. She completed her PhD in 2014 at the University of Colorado studying
metacommunity dynamics and diseases of pond breeding amphibians. She completed her

Dr. Pierre Comizzoli
Institute : Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, U.S.A.
Topic : Role of ex situ conservation and wildlife
genome banking for conservation
Pierre Comizzoli started his career 25 years ago as a research veterinarian in French Guyana to study the
seasonal reproduction of different mammalian species living in the rain forest. His next appointment was in
the African Sahelo-Saharan region where he was in charge of health and reproduction monitoring programs for livestock species. These first professional experiences allowed him to acquire a good basic knowledge in-the reproductive biology of various animal species. Dr. Comizzoli then completed a PhD in 2000 on in vitro fertilization in bovine and deer species. He characterized a new paternal effect on the early embryo development in both species and produced in vitro the first transferable embryos of red deer and Japanese sika deer. After receiving his PhD, he worked on the implementation of reproductive technologies and Genome Resource Banking for the conservation of wild ungulates at the National Museum of Natural History of Paris. In 2002, Dr. Comizzoli joined the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute at the National Zoological Park in Washington, DC as a staff scientist to develop new cryo-banking projects on gametes and gonadal tissues from rare and endangered species. His comparative research on gamete biology and fertility preservation (mainly using the domestic cat as a model) has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health for the past 12 years. Interestingly, his studies on germplasm cryobiology and alternate preservation methods in non-traditional animal models build new bridges with human reproductive medicine.
Dr. Comizzoli also is integrating reproductive science into conservation projects of wild carnivores and
ungulates in Northern Africa as well as in South-East Asia. Specifically, he has coordinated the reproductive
monitoring and performed artificial inseminations in different species (including giant pandas, clouded
leopards, or Eld’s deer) resulting in the births of healthy individuals that contribute to the sustainability of these rare species. Dr. Comizzoli has published >100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. He has
received several professional awards including the Smithsonian Secretary’s Research Prize (2008, 2012, and 2015) and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2011) for his innovative work on fertility preservation. Dr. Comizzoli has been serving in diverse leadership positions at the Smithsonian
Institution. He is coordinating since 2007 a Smithsonian-wide initiative to improve the management and use of biomaterial and environmental repositories within the Institution. He has been Director of the Consortium for Science (2014-2015) and is now Senior Program Officer for Science in the Office of the Provost for Museums, Education and Research.

IBD2019
Biodiversity is fundamental for human life and vital for the functioning of ecosystems. Human welfare depends on biodiversity, as it provides natural services such as fresh water and clean air, biological resources such as medicinal plants and food, as well as economic benefits of industrial development. Recognizing the importance of biodiversity to the quality of life and the economy, Thailand has been ramping up the effort in research into biodiversity and sustainable utilization as well as conservation. The richness of biodiversity and intensive effort in diversity exploration and conservation in Thailand, therefore, serve as a perfect backdrop for IBD2019. IBD2019 will consist of scientific conference and comprehensive exhibition dedicated to showcase the work of various local and international research organizations, government agencies, universities, schools, non-profit organizations, local communities and private companies contributing to biodiversity research and conservation in Thailand and neighboring countries.
