Euromonitor International’s insight revealed that 64% of global consumers want to have a positive impact on the environment through their daily lives, and nearly 80% of travellers will pay 10% more for sustainable travel features. 📊
Through 56 indicators across 7 pillars, EMI's Sustainable Travel Index shows top positions are dominated by Europe with much space for improvement for APAC countries; but as APAC destinations are gearing up for eco-tourism and improving destinations for sustainability as well, a lot of development and work are seen in the pipeline.
The speakers also gave a sneak peek into its "New Traveller Segments Report," which 8 different types of travellers and their personalities are identified. The piece will be officially launched in November- stay tuned to EMI's official pages!
🌏 In the latter part of the webinar, experts from Euromonitor International talk about how to put sustainability into action in three themes; innovation, digitalisation, and luxury travel. Understanding the resources is key to having sustainability initiatives tailored to the business’s reality for efficient sustainability transformations. Also, AI’s role in aiding sustainability transformation will only become increasingly important moving forward.
What are the sustainable strategies businesses can take considering customer trends? What opportunities are there that have been able to break free of what emerging countries already have? How can a destination improve their ranking on the sustainable travel index? 📣 PATA International Members, send us a message to request the link to the webinar recording.

The 2023 Gold Award "Marketing Campaign- State & City" winner is Kerala Tourism's "Pack Up for Kerala"! 🎒🛶
The campaign "Pack Up for Kerala" was conceptualised for an audience transitioning to normalcy post-COVID. The campaign idea, Make up for lost time– pack up for Kerala, was simple and direct; yet, it eloquently conveyed the sentiments of people during the transition to normalcy. There was regret about the immediate past and a determination to live life to the fullest - and to do so immediately. The line also exhorted everyone to regain their fun and freedom in one of India’s best-known destinations.
The campaign's digital videos and banners, which targeted domestic tourists within India, were promoted through print, radio, OOH, web portals, and social media channels.

The newly released ‘Annual Tourism Monitor 2023’ report shows that IVA numbers in 2022 were the strongest since 2019 and, as such, herald the much-awaited resurgence of the international travel and tourism sector for the Asia Pacific. 📈🧳
2022 saw a collective annual gain of almost 124.2 million foreign arrivals in 44 destinations, returning to a collective inbound count of nearly 265.5 million. There were wide differences at the three Asia Pacific destination region levels. The Pacific had the strongest growth rate in 2022 Y-o-Y, whereas Asia received both the largest number of arrivals and the greatest annual increase in absolute numbers from 2021. The Americas had the strongest recovery in the number of IVAs with 69%, followed by the Pacific, with over 57%.
Although Asia may have been slower in returning to growth up until 2022, the early 2023 figures show a very powerful return to dominance in the Asia Pacific mix of arrivals. Asia had the strongest performance of the three destination regions against the metrics of IVAs year-to-date, period-to-period growth rate and period-to-period increase in absolute numbers of IVAs.

The travel and tourism industry, diverse and interconnected, intersects with the majority of the 17 UNSDGs, positioning it as a catalyst for positive global change. 🫴🌏
Specifically, it can contribute to Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through fair wages, inclusive growth, and sustainable travel options. Addressing Goal 13 (Climate Action) involves reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable aviation technologies, while Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) is upheld by adopting eco-friendly practices, including waste reduction. Goals 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land) underscore the importance of nature conservation.
Moreover, the industry holds the potential to empower women (Goal 5), alleviate poverty (Goal 1), reduce inequality (Goal 10), and promote cross-cultural understanding (Goal 16) by ensuring equitable distribution of tourism benefits to local communities. Through data-driven decisions and collaboration, the travel sector can lead in sustainability, contributing to the well-being of our planet and its inhabitants.
Guided by the SDGs, Sabre recognises the industry's potential for global change. Its commitment to integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into operations benefits stakeholders worldwide, fostering a more sustainable and equitable future.

Expedia Group's insight revealed that 59% of travellers are not set on a specific destination when they start their path to purchase; they look at social media for inspiration and adopt OTA and meta-travel sites for planning and booking- indicating an open opportunity along this path to influence their travel decisions. 🌏📍
Visa's data showed that contactless payment, especially via mobile, has become an inseparable part of cross-border travel; there are 10.8x more contactless payment transactions seen in 2023 compared to 2021 and 19x more by mobile payments compared to cards.
In the latter half of the webinar, the three experts are joined by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Indonesia and Suruga Marketing & Tourism Bureau to take a look at how destinations are adapting to these observed traveller trends. For Suruga, the destination is increasingly using this type of data to identify the audience that has more potential to become their loyal visitors (i.e. will actively make plans to visit this second-tier destination) in order to create effective marketing strategies.
Indonesia has also been utilising data on consumer behaviour for different markets to determine what promotional strategies could be applied to attract visitors from different source markets. This will help build loyalty across different parts of their tourism destinations and expand the reach of tourism economic impact.
💳 On the topic of adopting digital payments, both destinations confirmed that their first-tier or more upfront sector have successfully reaped the convenience of digitalised payments, but the more traditional sector or more rural part of their destinations are slower in the transitioning process, mainly faced by the issue of digital literacy.
Recognising this challenge, Visa has implemented digital literacy training in key APAC travel destinations, as well as investing in user-friendly payment methods with greater capabilities to support local tourism in addressing diverse payment challenges.
What's the most effective online strategy Expedia has observed its clients using to inspire travellers' destination selection? What are the recent global events impacting traveller spending and choices? How can SMEs and secondary destinations in APAC boost recovery and attract travellers? 🔔 PATA International Members, send us a message to request the webinar recording.

The 2023 Gold Award "Marketing Campaign- National, Pacific" winner is Tourism Fiji's "Where Happiness Comes Naturally"! 🏝️💖
Happiness has always been a part of Fiji’s identity. It isn’t something that is turned on for tourists – it’s how Fijians live. Community & family, spirituality, the spirit of sharing, gratitude, and inclusion, all contribute to why Fiji is perfectly placed to create holiday experiences that bring genuine happiness to those who visit.
Happiness is a brand truth that Tourism Fiji has embraced since 2012, and it was time to have a fresh take on Happiness – one that centred not just on the tourist but on the truth that Fijians live life in a way that inspires happiness.
Now that visitors increasingly want more authentic travel experiences, the natural evolution was to shift the perspective and tell the story from the eyes of the people of Fiji. It’s this sentiment that the new brand platform seeks to capture.
So happy for your win, Tourism Fiji! Feel the happiness: https://www.fiji.travel/

Congratulations to the two waste-free championship winners: Sivatel Bangkok Hotel & Anantara Layan Phuket Resort! ♻️🏆
They were selected as the winner because of their outstanding commitments and practical measurable and scalable approach to tackling the pressing issue of food and plastic waste.
Started out with 100,000 kg of food waste in 2017, Sivatel has been able to reduce the amount to 56,000kg in one year in 2018. Following the initial success, the hotel continued to improve and advance their food waste reduction initiatives which now include a circular economy with organic chicken farm, in-house graden fertiliser, and BSF feed grown with food waste.
Anantara set up a green department with each department involved to tackle the plastic waste issue from all corners within the property. A series of constant changes include from plastic keycards to wrist keycards, replacing bottled water to canned water with recycle bin directly available in guest rooms, laundry bags to baskets, changing all signages to QRCodes and Apps, and more.
