🔍 Uncovering Thailand's Ancient Past in Nakhon Pathom & Suphan Buri 🏺

SEAMEO SPAFA organized a culture heritage trip to Nakhon Pathom and Suphan Buri provinces last Saturday, 25 January 2025. Our journey took us deep into Thailand's archaeological heritage, starting with the iconic Phra Pathom Chedi. This ancient Dvaravati stupa, adorned with intricate tiles and surrounded by galleries, reflects centuries of cultural evolution. Nearby, the Phra Pathom Chedi National Museum revealed rare artefacts from the 6th-10th centuries, offering insights into the glorious Dvaravati era.

At the U-Thong National Museum, we explored relics from the prehistoric and Dvaravati periods, including Buddha statues and ancient beads, alongside an impressive reconstruction of a Lao Song ethnic home. The Suphan Buri National Museum brought history to life with multimedia displays showcasing the evolution of the region—from prehistory through Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin—plus the legendary royal elephant duel!

Our final stop was the stunning Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan, where we marveled at the 23-meter-high Luangpho To Buddha in its unique Palilayaka posture, symbolizing a blend of U-Thong Suphannaphum and early Ayutthaya artistry.

💡 Key Highlights:
• Dvaravati relics at Phra Pathom Chedi & U-Thong Museum
• Prehistoric tools and cultural artefacts from Suphan Buri's rich past
• Immersive exhibits highlighting Thailand's historical milestones
• The majestic Wat Pa Lelai and its towering Buddha statue

A day filled with stories etched in stone, cultural wonders, and awe-inspiring architecture!

Latest SPAFA Journal Article: Re-examining the Division of Candi Borobudur into Kāmadhātu, Rūpadhātu, and Arūpadhātu - Seameo Spafa 21/01/2025

Just in! Check out the first SPAFA Journal article of 2025:

“Re-examining the Division of Candi Borobudur into Kāmadhātu, Rūpadhātu, and Arūpadhātu | Meninjau Ulang Pembagian Candi Borobudur Menjadi Kamadhatu, Rupadhatu, dan Arupadhatu”

by

So Tju Shinta Lee, Agus Aris Munandar, and Lilawati Kurnia

The interpretation that Candi Borobudur is divided into kāmadhātu, rūpadhātu, and arūpadhātu is widely adopted in many writings about Borobudur, despite being questioned by some scholars. This paper analyses the narrative reliefs, the latticed stūpas of the three circular terraces, and the central stūpa of Borobudur to examine if they correlate with the three dhātus (realms of existence).
