Thailand is projected to receive a substantial influx of international tourists this year, with estimates ranging between 28 to 30 million visitors, as the tourism sector aims for a yearly revenue of 2.3 trillion baht. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has set a revenue goal of 2.38 trillion baht, which constitutes around 80% of the revenue achieved in 2019, amounting to 3 trillion baht.

The country has already welcomed 15 million international visitors this year, surpassing the previous year's count of 11 million. This boost can be attributed, in part, to an increased number of visitors from China, which rose from a monthly average of 300,000 individuals between January and June to 400,000 people in July.

Anticipating a rise in visitors from Europe and the Americas, the TAT expects this surge to take place starting in October, following the current period of low tourism.

Regarding domestic travel, the implementation of special holidays has driven up the number of domestic tourism trips to 20-25 million per month. The TAT is confident that this trend aligns with its annual domestic target of 117-135 million trips. To ensure the attainment of its tourism goals, the TAT will persistently leverage soft power assets to promote Thai tourism.

Exciting news for businesses in the digital asset realm! A recent royal decree (No. 779, B.E. 2566) has introduced significant tax exemptions for investment token transfers. Companies issuing investment tokens since May 14, 2018, now benefit from corporate income tax and VAT exemptions on the transfer of these tokens in the primary market, aligning with the digital asset business law.

This development, effective from August 16, 2023, aims to foster investment and bolster Thailand's digital asset market. Notably, this exemption also applies to investment tokens traded in the secondary market, offering a holistic incentive for businesses to engage in the digital asset ecosystem.

Environmental policies in Thailand are governed by the Factory Act B.E. 2535 (1992) ("Factory Act") in conjunction with other legislation. The Factory Act aims to enhance public participation and adhere to the "polluter pays" principle. Various stakeholders are involved in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, including the business undertaking the project, the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), the permitting agency, the Expert Committee Review (ERC), and various consultants.

To obtain a permit, businesses must undergo several assessments to ensure the accurate evaluation of their factory's pollution level. Prior to initiating the process, businesses are required to:

✓ Define the type of projects and activities for the factory.

✓ Determine whether they intend to obtain a BOI certification for promoted activities.

✓ Identify the factory's intended location.

✓ Grasp the process of acquiring environmental and health impact assessments.

The Director-General of the Revenue Department has issued a set of comprehensive rules, procedures, and conditions, thereby heralding a new regime of corporate income tax exemption for investments in electronic data preparation systems, electronic data receiving systems, tax submission systems, as well as service fees disbursed to electronic data preparation service providers, electronic data remittance service providers, and tax remittance service providers. These provisions have been outlined in the Director-General’s Announcement on Income Taxes (No. 435), dated 28th June 2023, and are slated to become effective from 1st January 2023.

The Mahanakorn Partners Group Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary

On September 20th, 2019, the Mahanakorn Partners Group celebrated its 20th anniversary in the Bangkok Headquarters along with over two-hundred guests, who included members of the Royal Thai Government, high-ranking officials of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, members of the Board of the Thai Bar Association and the Lawyers Council of Thailand, representatives of European and North American Embassies—such as the Ambassador of the European Union, H.E. Mr. Pirkka Tapiola, the Ambassador of Italy, H.E. Mr. Lorenzo Galanti, Economic Officer of the U.S. Embassy, Mr. Eric Groff, among others—and, of course, many clients who have been with MPG for the best part of the past two decades.

Mahanakorn Partners welcomed the distinguished guests with the ambiance of a classical music duo, a harpist and a violinist from the Royal Bangkok Symphony Music School. Guests enjoyed gourmet delicacies and imported wines atop the Kian Gwan House III, overlooking lush Lumphini Park. MPG Chairman, Mr. Luca Bernardinetti, and Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Khun Vilasinee Thephasadin Na Ayuthaya, together with MPG Partners, directors and staff, were privileged to share MPG’s two-decade history with new and old friends, in this private gathering to commemorate the founding of the original member of the Mahanakorn Partners Group, Vimami Consulting, in 1999.
