What Are Homophones?
Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.

In Thai, a common example is:

ให้ (hâi) = to give / to allow

ไห้ (hâi) = [obsolete form of] to cry (incorrect spelling of "ร้องไห้")

Let's Clarify:

📌 ให้ (hâi) = to give, allow, let
Example:
แม่ให้เงินฉันทุกวัน/ Mâe hâi ngən chán túk wan
= Mom gives me money every day

📌 ไห้ (hâi) = ❗️Wrong spelling
People sometimes write "ไห้" when they mean "ให้" — but this is a common typo.

The correct word for "to cry" is: "ร้องไห้/róng hâi"
Example: เธอร้องไห้เพราะทะเลาะกับแฟน/ter róng hâi prór tá-lór gàp faen
= She cries because she has a fight with her boyfriend.
🤔 Comment below with a sentence using "ให้"!

✅ Polite "Yes" (when answering a call, request, or question politely)

Example:
A: คุณว่างไหม (khun wâang mái?) = Are you free?
B: ว่างค่ะ / ว่างครับ = Yes, I’m free.

✅ Casual "Yes" options
อืม (uem) = Mm-hmm / Yeah
เออ (er) = Uh-huh / Yep (friendly, casual)

About Kru Smuk

From teaching Thai to my exchange student friends at my University couple years ago, helping foreigners learn Thai language became my passion.

After my graduation last December 2018, I have devoted myself to build BananaThai, a language school providing great fun and an enjoyable experience to learn Thai language. According to my teaching experience, I not only teach Thai but am also able to personalize my lessons to suit each individual student's goals and learning style in order to help them learn Thai in the most efficient and motivating way.

All of my courses are specifically designed to suit specific purposes and goals of learning Thai. A variety of materials are used to support my students and track their progress, yet provide some fun.

Lastly, I would like to thank you for all my beloved students who, later, became my good friends giving suggestions and helping to support my BananaThai School, and further opportunities.
