It has been a happy week, as we awarded Certificates of Recognition to three (3) of our most committed volunteers for the year 2020. This should have happened long time ago, but due to covid19, we had to push it. Those volunteers spared most of their time and energy to work for their community without asking anything in return! There is always pride in voluntary work. Thank you all, and we love you 💖

In Western Equatoria State, male and female youth must get marriage to be recognized as adults; however, male youth are under severe pressure to meet escalating dowry prices. High level of unemployment, low income, lack of proper educational accomplishment, and the conflict significantly diminished avenues for economic success. As CHADO we believe that young people by no means have the answers to this specific challenges they are facing in their different communities. Neither do older generations. However, by bringing together the vision of young people today, and the experiences of older generations, there are higher chances that new answers to these challenges could be created. Today is – “a day to reimagine a better future for every child”!

Young people play a key role in bringing about positive change in society. This year’s theme, , acknowledges the voices of young people during this difficult time of COVID-19. The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a child rights crisis. If unaddressed, the costs of the pandemic may last a lifetime, and will affect girls and the most marginalised children disproportionately.

This World Children’s Day is a call for children to stand together during and after COVID-19 and to use it as an opportunity to reimagine the type of world they want to create. How can we build back better?

Sarah Pio Modi is a student of Supiri Secondary School in Juba. She developed what her friends and teachers now refer to as the “Corona Alphabet”. The ‘alphabet’ is a group of messages on COVID-19 prevention, reminding her classmates how to stay safe and positive during this difficult time. “It wasn’t easy for me when we were asked to stop going to school due to COVID-19 because I knew there was no way I would continue learning, but the school closure couldn’t stop me from being creative. One day I sat down and thought to myself that I could do something to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and I did; I made the corona alphabet. It is easy for people to remember the alphabet, even children know the ABCD, it is easy for them to learn. I have friends who have taken this home to teach their younger siblings”, Sarah says.

Sarah invented the COVID-19 alphabet that takes pride of place in the Head Teacher’s office at school. The school supported her by providing manila paper for her to write on. Her Head Teacher, Ben Tombe says, “Sarah is an active student, when she came to me with the idea of the corona alphabet, I was so impressed. Now students remember key messages using her writings, we hope to put this in every class”.

Sarah’s message on the World Children’s Day is: “As a young person, don’t look down on yourself, do whatever little you can to support those in need, let us continue learning and staying safe even after corona. My favourite letter is K for ‘kindness’ because during this difficult time, we need to be kind to one another”.

November 20th is a Universal Children's Day. It's a day to promote togetherness around the world, awareness of the problems children face in every corner of the globe, and improve the welfare for all children. would like to use this special day to send a very strong message to the public regarding the growing number of children, especially girls around the age of 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15 who are selling consumables like orange, maize, tomatoes, local juice and eggs ...etc in Yambio market. The fact that these children stay in town from morning til late evening (selling) is a sign of child labour and could exposed them more to risks, including rape, early pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and child marriage. It can also affect their physical and physiological wellbeing entirely. We call on the parent/guardians to take proper care of their children and ensure their safety at all times. We also call on the local government in Yambio to put appropriate measures in place so that children are not used as labourers. #
