Major General Atem inspects Giada Barracks

Juba - The newly appointed commander of the Tiger Division, Major General Atem Salva Kiir, has inspected the Giada military barracks in Juba after taking over command of the elite army unit on Wednesday.

According to photos shared online, General Atem inspected various facilities at the barracks as part of his tour of duty.

General Atem, the son of President Salva Kiir, also commands the National Security Service Special Forces.

Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir has formally assumed command of the Tiger Division, the presidential guard unit, following his appointment on Wednesday and subsequent briefing at SSPDF headquarters in Bilpam.

On Thursday, the newly appointed commander inspected various Tiger Division units at Giada, receiving operational briefings from unit heads on personnel welfare, institutional challenges, and prevailing operational requirements affecting the division.

Maj. Gen. Atem pledged closer cooperation with commanders to address soldiers’ concerns, enhance working conditions, and consolidate reforms, while acknowledging predecessors’ contributions and raising renewed expectations among troops for stronger leadership.

BREAKING NEWS: Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir takes over as Tiger Division commander

Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir is set to take over as a division commander following confusion and rumours surrounding his appointment on Tuesday.

Sources at Bilpam told HIJ that Atem, who was promoted last week from Brig. Gen. to Maj. Gen. after serving as commander of the NSS Special Force, will take over from Maj. Gen. Deng Madhang.

His appointment sparked uncertainty on social media on Tuesday, with conflicting reports circulating over whether he had officially been assigned to the command.

However, a source at Bilpam told HIJ that Atem has just concluded a briefing with CDF Gen. Santino Deng Wol and is expected to proceed to the Tiger Division headquarters in Giada to formally take over command.

HIJ is continuing to follow the developments.

FACTS AND CLARIFICATION ON MAJ. GEN. ATEM SALVA APPOINTMENT

1. Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit is the new commander of the Presidential Guards Division as he was appointed last evening.

2. Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit did not decline being Tiger Division Commander.

3. There was a brief palace drama as Senior Presidential Envoy wanted to sabotage his appointment.

4. There has never been any opposition from Tiger Division Commanders and/or any other Army Unit against Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit's assignment as New Tiger Division Commander.

5. The palace dramas ended with confirmation of Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit as Commander of Republican Guards Division (Tiger) after His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit directed Chief of Defence Forces ( SSPDF ) Gen. Santino Deng Wol to effect and enforce the changes.

6. Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit salutes the Commander In Chief & President of the Republic Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit and CDF Gen. Santino Deng Wol and vows to execute his new roles with diligence, commitment, and patriotism.

7. New Commander of Republican Guards Division (Tiger) Maj. Gen. Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit heads to Giada Military Tiger Headquarters and assumes his new roles this Wednesday, 9th September 2026.

South Sudan Eyes October Government Reshuffle Ahead of December Polls

South Sudan’s transitional government could be dissolved as early as October and replaced by a caretaker administration ahead of the country’s planned December 22 elections, government spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny has said.

Ateny said the proposed change would come as the transitional period draws to a close, with authorities preparing for the elections.

The move would represent a significant change in South Sudan’s political arrangement just weeks before voters are expected to go to the polls.

However, the proposed October transition has raised questions over its legal and political implications. South Sudan’s electoral framework requires the government to cease functioning three months before polling, potentially placing any October restructuring under close scrutiny.

The government has continued to maintain that the elections will proceed as scheduled, despite concerns raised by political and civil society groups over the legal, political and security conditions surrounding the vote.

The creation of a caretaker administration could further intensify those debates.

With the December 22 election date approaching, attention is now shifting to how a caretaker government would be formed, what powers it would hold, and whether such an arrangement would comply with South Sudan’s existing electoral and transitional laws.
