Today, South Sudan is marking the 20th anniversary of signing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
The historic agreement between former freedom fighters of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and the Sudanese government ended a 21-year civil war and transitioned the country to its independence in 2011.
Speaking to Radio Miraya this morning, some citizens recalled the excitement of the momentous day at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya where the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior and the Sudanese government signed the accord.
"I was in Nairobi, and I remember waking up at 2am with my cousin simply because we were told by the organising committee that by 7 in the morning whoever will not be at the stadium will not be allowed in," one listener recollected to the Miraya Breakfast Show, "Listening to Dr John Garang saying today we are having our country back, that was amazing and I will never forget that."
