Governor of Jonglei Condemns Derogatory Remarks by Hon. Martin Elia Lumoro, Demands Apology and Accountability

Bor, South Sudan – April 29, 2025

The Governor of Jonglei State, Hon. Riek Gach Kok, has strongly condemned the recent remarks made by Hon. Martin Elia Lumoro, which he described as “derogatory and divisive,” accusing the senior official of framing the Nuer community as both “hostile and non-hostile.”

Speaking during a press briefing in Bor on Tuesday, Governor Riek denounced the characterization, stating that such language not only disrespects the Nuer people but also threatens national unity. “The Nuer are not just an ethnic group; they are a majority. Anyone seeking to play political cards in South Sudan must do so with respect for all communities,” the Governor emphasized.

Hon. Riek Gach Kok joined several senior Nuer leaders within the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in calling for an immediate public apology from Hon. Martin Elia Lumoro. The Governor also called for Lumoro’s resignation and potential legal action, citing the damage his statement has caused to the fragile peace and cohesion of the nation.

“This is not just an insult to one group—it undermines the spirit of unity we are striving to build. No tribe should be labeled as hostile if we truly desire peace in South Sudan,” the Governor added.

The controversy has sparked a wave of responses from political and community leaders across the country, with many urging leaders to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric that may deepen ethnic tensions.

As calls for accountability grow, the public awaits a response from Hon. Martin Elia Lumoro regarding the accusations and demands being leveled against him.

Our plight has been prophesied, and our triumph will be celebrated by Africans in due season. The liberation of the Nuer is the liberation of Africa. Today, we mark the 11th anniversary of our genocide and hope for new beginnings to end this regime.
