UNITED NATION MISSION IN SOUTH SUDAN (UNMISS) Chinese engineers repair road in Wau!!

UNMISS Chinese engineers began repairing a road today leading from Wau to Koor Malang village in Western Bahr El-Ghazal State.

The two-kilometre road, which was severely damaged by recent heavy rains, is the only access road aid agencies can use to deliver items to vulnerable people in the village.

“Good traffic is (necessary) not only for movement of residents … but also for the development of the local community,” said Lt. Col Yu Zigang, commander of the engineering company.

The engineers said they expected to complete the road work in two weeks.

UNMISS South Sudan: trains ministry officials in media

Aiming to promote free and independent media in South Sudan, UNMISS held a one-day training workshop for officials from Central Equatoria State government ministries in Juba today.

Working on the grounds that an open, functional and transparent government was essential for free press, the mission’s Spokesperson and Media Relations Unit organized the training for 20 diplomats, directors and press officers.

The workshop covered daily work of a press office like dealing with the media, writing press materials and using social media.

“The importance of social media makes us think about how to share information,” said Daniel Dunyo, an official from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, who said his ministry had no website.

“I (will) go back and talk to the minister about the importance of social media,” he added.

UNMISS chief Hilde F. Johnson said officials had a vital role to play in helping the media and public understand the government’s agenda and activities.

She urged participants, drawn from such key ministries as Information and Broadcasting, Cabinet Affairs, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Petroleum and Mining Industries, to make every effort to do this.

“The workshop was important because before we knew just the (basics) of the work,” said Miriam Maneno, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

“Now we know the details and have (gained) the (skills) to deal with news … and get access to our leaders to (get important stories into the media),” he said.

US Embassy donates equipments to SSNPS!

Assisting South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) with its operations, the United States Embassy donated equipment to the force in Juba on 13 August.
US Ambassador Susan Page handed over the items, including flashlights, forearm protectors, shin guards and chest protectors, to Minister of Interior and Wildlife Conservation Lt. Gen. Aleu Ayieng Aleu at SSNPS headquarters.

UAPL TOWER - Under Construction

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group is set to make its first investment in South Sudan by providing a financing package of $5m to support the development of a $16.9m commercial building in Juba.

The structure, dubbed The Equatoria tower is a development of UAP Properties Limited (UAPL), a newly created South Sudan real estate company. UAPL is a joint venture company created between UAP Insurance South Sudan Limited with a shareholding of 70 percent, and Central Equatoria Investment Company (CEIC) with 30 percent.

If completed, The Equatoria Tower will reportedly be the first modern serviced building of any kind in South Sudan, offering reliable amenities like water, power, sewage disposal, three high speed elevators, ready to use Information Communication Technology (ICT) installations and air conditioning.

The commercial facility is being positioned as a platform for the development of quality business infrastructure in South Sudan by supporting UAP Group’s growth in Sub Saharan Africa, earmarked to create about 100 direct and indirect jobs.

Since it attained independence in July 2011, South Sudan has with the support of the World Bank Group (IFC) put in place 19 laws, which directly impact on doing business in the country. Fully incorporated with international benchmarks, these set of laws reportedly establish a robust commercial legal environment that enhance business and investment opportunities in the country.

South Sudan Mine Action Strategic Plan 2012-2016

The South Sudan Mine Action Strategic Plan 2012-2016 was approved in June. Barge Convoy Carrying Stranded Returnees Arrives in Juba

978 South Sudanese returnees previously stranded in the border town of Renk arrived in the capital Juba now (July 15) on an IOM-organized barge convoy.
The returnees were greeted on arrival in Juba by family and friends, as well as representatives from IOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission and humanitarian partners.

After disembarking and being registered at Juba port, the returnees were escorted to the Juba way station. From there, they will be transported by road to their final destinations of choice. Most of the returnees have indicated a preference to settle in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal and Greater Equatoria regions.

UNMISS Police Visits SSNPS in Gogrial West County, Warrap State

UN Police (UNPOL) met with South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) officers in Gogrial West County, Warrap, during one of their daily visits to SSNPS posts across the state. The four UNPOL officers delivered a presentation on “Community and policing and problem solving". They also checked on detainee cases, length of detentions and cell conditions.

Martyrs Day, Juba

South Sudanese celebrated Martyrs Day at John Garang Mausoleum in Juba on 30 July, commemorating those who died fighting for South Sudanese independence. The Day also pays homage to John Garang de Mabior, a famous leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, who perished in a plane crash on 30 July 2005.
