King Gbudwe was the last monarch of the Azande Kingdom, a powerful military kingdom that once covered parts of modern-day South Sudan, Congo, and Central African Republic. Gbudwe was known for his military skills and led a resistance against slave traders in the 19th century. However, he was captured and killed by British colonialists in 1905.
Here are some facts about King Gbudwe:
Life
Gbudwe was born around 1835 and was also known as Yambio. He was a short, stout man with protruding breasts and eyes that sparkled like stars.
Military
Gbudwe was known for his military prowess and was unusual among Azande kings for leading from the front. He often fought in person as a young man.
Death
Gbudwe was killed during a British patrol led by Major Boulnois. Some accounts say he was shot in the arm and thigh, while others say he shot three members of the patrol. He was then carried to a hut, where he died from his injuries.
Legacy
After Gbudwe's death, the Azande kingdom was without a king for over a century. The current king, Atoroba Peni Rikito, was crowned in 2022.
