A Leader’s Warning; Serve the Country, Not Yourself
A true statesman is not a boss of people but a servant of the country. His job is to connect today to the future. He should work not for cheers but for the next generation. He must treat the nation like something he is trusted to care for, not a prize he has won. Laws guide him. Strong institutions support him. The life of the quiet, ordinary citizen is how he is judged each day. He must be careful with power, clear about his goals, and humble before history. His power comes with heavy cost. Every law he makes either builds the country up or tears it down. When he speaks, he should bring people together. When he spends money, he should build things. When he makes a decision, he must be fair. The country will live longer than any man. Only a man who knows this should lead.
But power lies to you. People around a leader often call bad ideas wise and call stealing smart. Mobutu Sese Seko ruled Zaire for 30 years. People praised him, but government offices fell apart and money from the treasury went to his own palaces. Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe was once called a hero. His supporters cheered while the money became worthless and farms stopped growing food. These leaders ate praise and believed the lie that they were the nation. A leader who listens to flatterers instead of the people has already started to kill his country. Flatterers do not build. They only cover up a dead body.
What happens after a state is destroyed is worse than being poor. It is being forgotten. The palace doors shut. The songs stop. The same men who bowed to the leader now walk away. When Siad Barre of Somalia ran away, his statues came down and the country broke apart. When Idi Amin of Uganda died far from home, no large crowds came. There was only silence. Every ruler must learn this lesson from history; you only rent power. Your legacy will be judged. If you waste the nation to buy praise, people will forget you fast after you die. No picture, no building with your name, no slogan will last if you betrayed the people.
So, to you who lead today, hear this truth; the cheers will not be at your funeral. Lead like your story is already written, because it is. Make the courts strong, even if you cannot control them. Protect the country’s money, even though you did not earn it. Leave your office stronger than you found it. Let people link your name to schools that still stand, roads that still work, and laws that also limit the next leader. The final judge of a statesman is not the people who fear him now. It is the children not yet born who will live with what he left behind. Choose to be remembered, not just talked about for a moment.
