Dr. Yumkella Engages Development Partners Ahead of WAIIS 2026

Special Envoy for the West Africa Integration and Investment Summit (WAIIS), Hon. Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, has engaged development partners, embassies and high commissions in Sierra Leone to strengthen collaboration ahead of WAIIS 2026. The meeting, convened by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, provided an opportunity to present the Summit’s vision and four strategic pillars—energy and industrial growth, strategic minerals, agribusiness and food systems, and digital transformation—while highlighting the Freetown Communiqué as its strategic roadmap. Dr. Yumkella emphasized that WAIIS is designed as a long-term, ECOWAS-anchored and private-sector-led platform to convert regional commitments into investments, bankable projects and policy action through 2030. Development partners welcomed the initiative and expressed readiness to support its successful implementation and long-term sustainability.

The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has intensified efforts to curb illicit drug trafficking following the interception and subsequent destruction of 396 cartons of Tramadol valued at millions of US dollars. The narcotics were seized at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay through a joint operation involving SLPHA, the Sierra Leone Police, ONS, TOCU, NDLEA and other key institutions. SLPHA Director General Yankuba Bio reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to strengthening port security and deepening collaboration with law-enforcement agencies to prevent Sierra Leone’s ports from being used for drug trafficking. SLRSA–Nigeria Road Safety Cooperation

The Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), Mr. James Bagie Bio, has met with the Nigerian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Her Excellency Ambassador Ayo Luther-Ogbomode, to strengthen bilateral cooperation on road safety. The engagement focused on knowledge sharing, institutional collaboration and adopting best practices, building on the recent five-year SLRSA–Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Memorandum of Understanding. ED Bio expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s support and urged the Ambassador to use her good office to further advocate for initiatives that will make Sierra Leone’s roads and road use safer for all.

SLRSA Management and Staff today honored Executive Director Mr. James Bagie Bio following his successful participation at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Road Safety in New York. Staff presented him with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his exemplary leadership, outstanding representation of Sierra Leone, and unwavering commitment to advancing road safety.

President Dr Julius Maada Bio had a fun-filled weekend with his family. The first family interfaced with nature, from Leicester Peak to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
