I set my camera on the low stone wall, across from the four pots that were always there. Weathered limestone, pitted by rain & time. I was adjusting for the verticals, making sure the lines of the old house stood straight, when the blue door opened.

The ancient doors on Island Hvar are some of the most beautiful & evocative things on the island. Often weathered & faded by the sun & sea air, they tell the story of the island's rich history & culture.
They represent the life & vitality of the island. Some say it's because green is the color of nature & brings good luck, others say that fishermen use to paint their doors green, with the leftover color of their boats.

The house, crumbling vestige of a time long past, was once a vibrant hive of activity. A fisherman with skin weathered by sun & wind, would sit on the stone porch, mending nets & spinning tales of legendary catches.

The person who emerges from the hardest hour is not healed, not arrived, not finally whole. They are simply more honest about what they are. In that honesty, strangely, there is something that resembles freedom.

We have conquered distances, mapped the human genome, connected every corner of the globe to a single network. But when the sudden halt comes: a test result, an unexpected pain, a loved one resting behind a closed door, all that technological armor falls away. We are all eventually reduced to the same solitary figure at the end of a long, shadowed hallway, waiting for a word.

We build such tough armor to survive the modern world. We have to, just to weather the constant bombardment of information & the sheer velocity of daily life. Yet, underneath that armor, we are all just flesh & bone, waiting for news, hoping for more time, terrified of the unknown.

As I walked, I thought about the people I’ve loved & the friends who drifted away, not necessarily from anger or a dramatic falling out, but from the quiet, relentless pull of time and distance. We are all just colliding orbits, sometimes syncing up for a few beautiful years, sometimes just brushing past each other.

The air was crisp, holding the kind of evening chill that makes you instinctively pull your jacket a little tighter. I was walking just to walk, with no destination in mind, letting the steady rhythm of my footsteps set the tempo for the noise in my head. The city was winding down, shedding the urgency of the workday for the quieter hum of the night.

One rainy Tuesday in April, when the Ljubljanica river was swollen and green, a shiver ran through the bronze. It wasn't the wind. It was the Muse.
She looked down at France, her gaze heavy with the weight of his unrequited longing for Julija Primic.
"France," she whispered, her voice like the chime of the Franciscan Church bell. "You’ve been staring at that window for a hundred years. She isn't there."
The statue of the poet didn't move his head, his voice rumbled from the depths of the bronze plinth. "I know, my Lady. But a poet’s duty is to wait. Even if the ink has dried and the paper has turned to dust."

The crisp April breeze swept down Čopova Street, carrying with it the scent of espresso from the corner cafes and the faint, sugary aroma of fresh pastries. Around her, Ljubljana was alive with the familiar Saturday afternoon hum of tourists pointing toward the pink facade of the Franciscan Church at the end of the road.
