الاستشعار عن بعد للطلاب المبتدئين ..

يتمثل هذا المفهوم في استخلاص وجمع المعلومات والبيانات عن سطح الأرض باعتماد الصور الجوية الرقمية والمرئية الملتقطة من الأعلى، وذلك إما بواسطة تسجيل الأشعة الكهرومغناطيسية المنعكسة أو المنبعثة من سطح الأرض. وتمكن هذه المعلومات من معرفة ماهية الأجسام وطبيعتها دون تماس فيزيائي أو كيميائي مباشر مع هذه الأجسام.

اعتمد الاستشعار عن بعد على الأشعة الكهرومغناطيسية، فعندما تسقط هذه الطاقة على جسم ما فهي تتفاعل معه ، يمتص جزء منها و ينعكس جزء آخر . الطاقة المنعكسة هي التي تستخدم لاستكشاف أو استبيان طبيعة الجسم وهي التي تستقبلها أجهزة الاستشعار عن بعد. وأحيانا يكون الجسم نفسه مصدرا للإشعاع الكهرومغناطيسي بحسب خواصه ودرجة حرارته .
يعتبر مجال الجيولوجيا من بين المجالات التي تعرف تطبيقا واسعا لتقنيات الاستشعار عن بعد. فبعد التقاط الصور الفضائية عن طريق الأقمار الاصطناعية أو الصور الجوية باستخدام الطائرات، يتم معالجتها باستخدام برامج معالجة خاصة من أجل تحقيق عدة أهداف، من بينها:
- رسم الخرائط الجيولوجية الصخرية و البنيوية
- رسم خرائط لتوزيع مختلف المدخرات المائية السطحية، وتتبع تطورها
- التنقيب عن المعادن والنفط
- رصد الظواهر الطبيعية كالانهيارات الأرضية
- انجاز خرائط الأخطار الجيولوجية
- متابعة حركية الجليد و ذوبانها
