Before Castles

Below was our first Youth Festival in Ben Ghazi Libya in 1979. ( LR; Jacques Renaud, Marlon Green ( American) John Cruise -Wilkins and soon to be chairman of the Seychelles Chess Federation Rowny Vidot. However, it was a lot more than just that.

Although the birth of organized chess in Seychelles was much earlier, this festival in Libya was Seychelles first exploration into the international chess scene a year after they were officially recognized by FIDE who was under the leadership of Max Euwe. This was at a time when Africa had recently become part of Fide's zonal system which provided the continent access to Interzonal competitions. These in the picture were vital catalysts of Seychelles introduction to International competition.
