Games cancelled and postponed.

The much-anticipated tournament which was scheduled for the Holiday period is now cancelled and postponed for a later date. We Sincerely again apologize for the inconvenience this may cause to most teams that have already put in place trainings for this tournament. The reason for this cancellation was because we just recently lost one of our elder, chief and supporter at the host village. It is something we hold dear in custom towards showing our respect to our late chief. So, until we commemorate his 100 days which fall on the month of January, the tournament is now cancelled and to be scheduled to a later date.
Again, on behalf of the Local Organizing committee, Sincere apologies and looking forward to hosting the games soon.

WAE TO DEBUT IN SOL-TAHITI CLASH

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

TOP national defender Javin Wae will make his international debut for the national team in the final deciding match against Tahiti early tomorrow morning.

The 19-year-old was in doubt for the world cup qualifiers in Qatar after picking up an ankle injury during the team’s final friendly clash with the Lion’s Football club from Australia during their two weeks camp last month.

However, head coach Felipe Arango said last night the young defender will be given the chance to play in the final match against Tahiti.

“Javin has recovered well and the medical team and the physio have helped him a lot in monitoring his injury to recover as quickly as possible,” Arango said.

He also confirmed that Wae has resumed training with the team on Wednesday, adding the young defender trained really hard and looks good to be back on the pitch for the final Group A clash.

“During our Wednesday’s session, he practiced really hard and gave hundred percent to our session that day.

“I understand Leon Kofana did a very great job in the defence against Cook Island but Wae will be the first starting central defense for our final match.

“He really wants to play and he deserves to play.

“He is 100 percent recovered and he’s ready to play.”

The coach also said he will not make any changes in the team line-up unless there’s a need to make a slight change for the final match.

“We shouldn’t change our winning system and strategy of the team.

“The same lineup that plays during our last friendly in Australia against the Lions FC and on our first match against Cook Island will make the first 11 line-up for the match against Tahiti.

“We will not change anything unless we have some kind of problem in the next 24 hours.

“The only changes we make is Wae to be in the first 11-line up instead of Kofana,” he said.

The national team will take on Tahiti, 1am tomorrow at the Grand Hamad stadium for the decider in group A.

The winner of the match will determine who will play in the semi playoff against the leader of group B.

The Grand Hamad Stadium is set to host a historic first-ever Oceania qualifier outside of the Oceania region as Solomon Islands and Cook Islands get the FIFA World Cup 2022 Oceania qualifiers underway in the Group A opener on Thursday local time in Doha, Qatar.

Solomon Islands, ranked second in the region are favourites against the rank outsiders Cook Islands who lost on the past two occasions the two teams met in the Oceania World Cup qualifiers in 2001 and 2004.

However, Solomon Islands coach said it’s uncharted water for his team since he doesn’t know much about Cook Islands ahead of the encounter. The Spaniard insists that Solomon Islands respects their opponent and will treat the match as if they are playing against the top nations in Oceania.

Considering how tough is to progress into the latter stages of the competition, Felipe urged his players to work harder to get a crucial three points in the opener.

“For me, I am going to treat them the same as New Zealand. I told this to the team, we have to be respectful to all the teams, unfortunately couldn’t watch any filming but the game is the same if we play New Zealand, Fiji or New Caledonia.

“It’s an important game and we have to get the three points and we need to work really hard to try to accomplish that,” he said.

The Spaniard added that getting a positive result in a tournament-opening match is vital for the national team to build confidence heading into the next two group matches against Vanuatu and Tahiti.

“We need to get the three points in the first game that would be good for the young boys, for the team to get some confidence for the next match. Three strong teams how I see it. It’s not just two strong teams.

“So, like I said it’s extremely important to get the first three points to get some confidence for the next match. We only have two days’ rest between Cook Islands and Vanuatu. It’s important not to get any injury and we have treated all the three games the same,” Felipe added.

His opposite number, Alan Taylor the Cook Islands coach said his team have a game plan to approach the game against Solomon Islands knowing very the qualities of the Melanesians.

Taylor knows what it is like to play against Solomon Islands as he was the coach of Cook Islands 20 years ago when in a 9-1 thrashing in the FIFA World Cup 2002 Oceania qualifiers in Australia.

“From history, I have played against the Solomons since I’ve coached in the past. So, I know what to expect in terms of their technical ability, in terms of their strengths, their conditioning, their pace,” he said.

“So, I’m expecting similar, something sort of fast attacking football but we got a plan for this and I think we will cope with it. Well obviously, a very good side and well-coached”.

GOVT TO BUILD SPORT HOUSE

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

THE venue for a dedicated sport house to be funded by the government through the National Hosting Authority (NHA) and National Sport Council (NSC) is now identified.

The facility will be built at the Panatina School area purposely to accommodate offices of all the sport federations in the country.

NHA chairman Dr Jimmy Rodgers highlighted that government investment is more to come, as he praises the current government for the vision in prioritizing sport development of the country for a long term legacy.

“You have not seen any government since independence that put this kind of investment and focus on the people of this country and on sports in the country.

““We have complained a lot following a very few number of medals obtained from past games the country has participated regionally and internationally.

“This is because we have not invested and past governments have not recognized the people of the country in terms of sport development,” the chairman said.

He explained that the proposed sport house is a government vision in providing all the sport federations with a proper office space for their operations.

“The government in fact has instructed me to seek financial means for a sport house.

“The sport house is the building that we hope to be able to finish by game time, but even if it doesn’t finish, it doesn’t matter because the purpose of the sport house is to have office spaces for the rest of the federations that do not have offices. A dedicated one for every single federation,’ Rodgers said.

He also confirmed that the site for the building was already identified pending financial means to proceed with the work.
“The site has been identified.

“It will be located at Panatina School which is our first primary target and with the land we obtained from the NSC.Land is not an issue and now we just seeking for the financial means to process the work.

“And this is a total separate investment from the NHA budget and that’s another one we’re focusing on to deliver,” added the NHA chairman.

NHA SUPPORTS CAPACITY OF NATIONAL SPORTS COUNCIL

The National Hosting Authority (NHA) has extended its arm to support the capacity building of the National Sports Council (NSC) as the main body established by the Solomon Islands Government purposely to support the development of sports in the country.

This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NHA and the NSC on Friday 11th March 2022 which coincided with the official opening of the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sports (SINIS).

Signatories to the MoU are the NHA Chairman, Dr Jimmie Rodgers and the NSC Chairman, Mr. Joe Sika.

“The MoU allows the NHA to support the NSC which is a national investment and part of the legacy of hosting the 2023 Pacific Games as we are not just about 2023 but also the future of sports in the country,” Dr. Rodgers said.

As such, the NHA is expanding its scope to set in place additional investment to build NSC as a well-resourced and functioning body to be able to take care of the multi-billion dollar facilities Solomon Islands will have as a result of the Games.

The National Sports Council (NSC) will inherit and manage all facilities as a key legacy for the 2023 Pacific Games.

The NHA Chairman also revealed that the current Government is proposing to establish a Sports House that will accommodate all the National Sport Federations (NSFs) in the country.

“The purpose of the proposed Sports House is to accommodate office spaces for sport federations that do not have office spaces and dedicated to the federations. A piece of land at Panatina is the primary target for this investment and the second option is a piece of land Government has taken from NSC. We are looking now at financing this proposed investment,” Dr. Rodgers said.

“This MoU has brought us to work closely together to support NSC deliver on its mission,” he added.

The NHA Chairman also revealed that they are currently working on a fund to enable NSC to manage the facilities for at least two years after the Games.

“There has been no appreciation of the important of sports at the Government level in the past, and the importance of supporting the institution that was created to develop sports in Solomon Islands.

“The current Government believes in the development of sports and through the NHA we are committed in handing over the facilities to NSC with funds to support the sustainability of these facilities for two years while at the same time we work on strengthening the capacity of NSC going into the future,” the NHA Chairman said.

Meanwhile, the NSC Chairman, Mr. Joe Sika reiterated that since all the facilities for the 2023 Pacific Games will be handed over to the NSC when completed it is necessary for the NSC to prepare now for the takeover.

“The MoU with NHA will enable NSC to recruit people to help us prepare for post Pacific Games. We will be looking to recruit a Facilities Manager and a Facilities Director as part of our preparation to take over the facilities.

“There will be a Sports Solomon Fund established to help ongoing maintenance of facilities going forward and we will start working on a budget for this purpose.

“With the world class facilities we are going to have the NSC will support National Federations to bid for future regional competitions which will bring in needed revenue to sustain support towards sports development in the country moving forward,” Mr. Sika said.

NSC recently appointed a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Alison Burchell who has already arrived in the country and have taken up office.

Ms. Burchell is a former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Fiji. SMs Burchell studied Economics and Industrial Sociology at the University of Cape Town and she is a qualified sports professional through Sport Accord (Switzerland) and is a qualified facilitator and/or trainer in conflict resolution through the South African Sports Commission.
