General Authority of Customs (GAC) has exempted 905 food items and medical supplies from customs duties for the next six months.
The decision is aimed at helping the economic sector cushion the impact of the precautionary measures being rolled out as part of the coronavirus mitigation efforts.
The GAC said the customs duties imposed on 905 commodities included in the “Nadeeb” system for electronic customs clearance have been cancelled. These commodities have varied between basic foodstuff commodities and a number of medical requirements for personal and household hygiene.
The main food items to which the exemption applies include meat, fish, dairy, cheese, legumes, oils, pastries and juices among others. Medical supplies that are exempted from customs duties include face masks, sterilisers, soap products, detergents, sterilisation wipes, personal and household hygiene items for personal use.
