Hi, looking for a yoga teacher staying here in Doha this summer, qualified to teach mummy and baby yoga..please PM me if you can help..thanks
Hello dear yogi friends from Yama:

I hope this message finds you well and happy 🙂

I'm writing to share a wonderful intention with all of you: Peace Revolution, a global meditation project I volunteer for, has recently appointed me country coordinator for Qatar; as part of this new role, we're planning a series of free meditation workshops in Qatar and the whole region (which so desperately needs it at the present moment). Do check out our videos, pictures and other events around the world:
https://wpifoundation.org/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgMZE8G-WP0

We're looking for passionate individuals and organizations (companies, schools, NGOs and yoga studios) who are interested in helping us organize free sessions for the benefit of the larger community in September (4-9th).

It would be great if we can arrange at least one free session at Yama to strengthen the yoga family across Doha, make your space even more visible and amplify our peaceful energy 🙂

Please let me know if you are interested in helping us organize some sessions during those dates.

Have a graceful day, don't hesitate to conact me and let's make some magic happen! We look forward to planting the seed of inner peace and mindfulness with your help in Qatar 🙂

Eid Mubarak!

Working with the exhalation in your viloma breathing is a wonderful practice at the end of class just before your savasana. Slowing and focusing on the exhalation promotes relaxation and stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system which will serve you well when you come to relax.

Like with viloma breathing on the inhalation we can move the breath through different parts of the body - or simply work with keeping it quiet and smooth and relaxing.

To begin take a smooth, full and quiet inhale without any interruption. When the inhale is complete, pause — hold the breath in for a moment.

Begin to exhale slowly, and then pause and hold. Exhale just a little more, then pause and hold again. And once more — so there are a total of 3 interruptions in the exhale. This may rise to 5 when you’ve fine-tuned your control.

When the lungs are completely empty, take a momentary pause at the end before you inhale slowly and smoothly.

After some time of practicing viloma with just the inhalation or with just the exhalation you can combine them for the full experience but do make sure that when you start this you feel safe with the first two versions. Let us know how it goes. We love the social part of social media.

Viloma breathing, commonly translated as interrupted breathing, actually means against the hair, or against the flow. It is a simple pranayama technique where you pause briefly during your breath. As a technique it is accessible to most students and practitioners as it gently introduces the concept of expanding the length of the breath and lung capacity without being too taxing. Benefits of Viloma include:
*Improves control of your breath and movement of air within your body
*Helps you cool down after an active yoga class
*Helps to relieve anxiety
*Helps to relieve tension from PMS

There are three variations:
1. Interrupted inhalation
2. Interrupted exhalation
3. Interrupted inhalation & exhalation

We will look at the first one here and the second two in our next breathing post.

One of the advantages of this technique is that it moves your awareness into different parts of the breathing cavity. When we teach this to beginner students we start by inhaling into the belly, then into the diaphragm and then into the back of the lungs.

But you can change this up to build awareness. For example, you can try to breathe into the pelvic floor, then into the right chest and then the left chest. Or you can focus on the back body - breathe into the lower spine, the back of the diaphragm, the back - etc. Mix it up to explore and build awareness. In all cases the breath rhythm is the same. Inhale, pause and hold, inhale into another area, pause and hold, inhale into the third area, pause and hold - complete exhalation.

Try it with your morning practice and let us know how it feels.

Sending love to everyone from @Yamayogastudios and @anandayogadetox

Every pose has its story and every pose has its challenges. We often spend a lot of time talking about the legs in Warrior B - and of course we need to. We need to keep both the back and front knee safe which means attention to the right placement of the feet and the right engagement of the legs. But the arms are also important.

Mythologically the arms in this pose represent the swords of revenge. But with the proper attention they can provide an example of paying attention to subtle muscle engagement as opposed to gross muscle engagement. To relax the neck fully here requires that we energise but relax the biceps. This means that we can lift the arms from below using the triceps rather than from above by using the biceps. Doing this requires a different way of thanking but brings attention away from the "vanity muscles" and into underlying support muscles.

Anyway give it a go. Take your Virabhadrasana B and lengthen those arms then breathe focusing on the support provided by the triceps. Let us know how it feels. We always want to hear from our students.

We love the warrior poses for so many reasons - first and foremost we love the story.

The story speaks to love, passion, betrayal, revenge, anger, grief, hate and violence -- in short so many of the emotions that dictate to our daily lives It begins with the passionate love match of Lord Shiva and Sati. The marriage was made against the consent of Daksha, Sati's father. Shortly after their marriage and the couple's retreat to the forests Daksha organised a great ceremony, known as Yagna, to which he invited all but not Lord Shiva and Sati. When Sati heard about her father's insult and betrayal she was both broken hearted and filled with rage. Against her husband's advice she attended the ceremony where she and her father argued and where he publicly humiliated her for her choice. Sati, let down by the one man upon whom she, as a daughter, should always be able to rely. made an internal resolve to relinquish all family ties. She summoned up her strength and spoke this vow to her father, “Since you have given me this body I no longer wish to be associated with it.” She walked past her father and sat in a meditative seat on the ground. Closing her eyes, envisioning her true Lord, Sati fell into a mystic trance. Going deep within herself she began to increase her own inner fire through yogic exercises until her body burst into flames which consumed her.

Virabhadra was born of Siva's unbearable suffering when he heard about the death of his wife. Inflamed by grief he tore out his dreadlocks and threw them into the fire. Thus Virabhadra and the fierce goddess Kali were born. Shiva then made them commanders of the legions he sent to avenge Sati’s death.

When we practice any of the warrior variations we are enacting this story. Warrior 1 represents Virabhadra thrusting up through the ground with sword in hand.
Warrior 2 is Virabhadra making his presence known by standing ready to strike with his sword. Warrior 3 is Virabhadra lifting his sword and cleanly using it to behead King Daksha.

And yet there is another symbolic level. Shiva can also been seen as the Higher Self who slays the prideful ego, (Daksha), for the sake of the heart, (Sati). Through means of infinite compassion, the higher Self forgives the ego but never the less withdraws to a secluded place with only the essential nature of the heart left intact. In this instance Viabhadra and Kali aren’t simply bloody warriors. Like Shiva, they destroy only to save and enter battle totally unattached to the fruits of their labor.

We all live lives filled with human emotions. Yoga and it's wonderful poses offers us tools to remind us of the costs of passion and the benefits of detachment and control. There is more to the story of course but let's save that for another day. Meanwhile check out our online classes at yamayogastudios.com/schedule.
