Do women have significant representation in Pakistani films?

Speaking of Pakistan, the ratio here - believe it or not – is slightly better, given the number of local films made each year. In fact, out of the 68 Pakistani films (according to KJP) that have released in the last five years (2013-2017), more than 30 per cent of them have meaningful female representation with women essaying diverse roles including that of a model (Amna Ilyas in Good Morning Karachi), musician (Uzma Hassan in Arth) and gangster (Hareem Farooq in Parchi). Also, films that aren’t dedicated to any one gender have managed to give almost equal screen time to both the male as well as female leads, without belittling the role of women. The list includes names like Balu Mahi, Bachaana, Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay, Punjab Nahi Jaungi and Actor In Law that are in sharp contrast with Na Maloom Afraad, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, Wrong No. and Mehrunisa We Lub U in terms of female representation.

Looking back at films that have come out in 2018 so far, Cake and Motorcycle stand out when it comes to women characters; Aamina Sheikh, Sanam Saeed and Beo Zafar (Cake) and Sohai Ali Abro (Motorcycle Girl) carry the films on their shoulders as they substantially contribute to the overall narrative and evolve as stronger, self-sufficient and smart individuals who are no less than men in anyway.

The film revolves around the intense patriotic sentiments supported by some of the veterans of Lollywood including Nadeem Baig and Kiran Malik in lead role. Acting comes naturally to Adil Murad. Born to a star father Waheed Murad (late), Adil has been a part of glitz and glamour since he was a child. He worked in two films as a child star and one in his teens. However, he professionally started acting in 2005. He was first introduced to television by Sania Saeed and Shahid Shafaat. “I was lucky to play the lead opposite Sania Saeed in my first T.V play,” says Adil. Gradually he was able to impress the audience by his acting skills. His T.V show ‘Lakhon ka Such’ was an instant hit that made him a household name in no time.

Shakeel Siddiqui شکیل صدیقی‎) s a Pakistani television stand-up comedian better known as 'Teeli' in Pakistan.

With its rich history and diverse cultural landscape, Pakistan has an abundance of stories. But a lack of opportunities and a shrinking local market are driving non-commercial content creators to the brink.

At the moment it’s gradually coming back to life, but 20 years back we had a booming cinema business in Pakistan. We had more than 600 cinemas. At that time, the local film industry was quite active, mainly producing films that were screened. But then we had a political regime in the ’80s that imposed very high entertainment taxes and strict censor policies, which ruined the local film and cinema industry.

I believe that the film industry of Pakistan will take time to grow, bringing forth some good work and some bad along with it. HUM Network Ltd. took their first initiative with Bin Roye, where we made the movie and also handled its worldwide distribution, which itself was an initiative by any movie production house in the country. Nevertheless, we have high hopes for the industry and have vision for a great future of Pakistani films.
