Hey, guys! I'm glad to see that my absence on here hasn't gone unnoticed, lol. For the past few months, I've been focusing my creative energy elsewhere: fashion design! Now that I've obtained two qualifications in the field to show for it - Certificate of Fashion Design and Certificate in Sewing and Pattern Making - I thought Iโ€™d pop in for a quick bake and collab post.

This is my spin on the hosted by the talented Sasha () and Fred ()! Thank you so much for having me. ๐Ÿค— These b&w macarons were inspired by my first ever fashion illustration and piece! ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿช” I hope everybody had a happy yesterday! I definitely had fun experimenting with this macaron creation.
๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿช” When it comes to food photography, I usually avoid dark places - evidently, I did the exact opposite with this project. I wanted the lantern to shine (literally) โœจ
๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿช” I wanted to challenge myself even more and made this lantern out of 100% oat flour. Lighting the candle after all the piping and assembly was SO satisfying. ๐Ÿ˜

More Spirited Away macarons! ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ’™ These were made entirely out of oat flour and filled with a whipped French vanilla-rose water ganache.
๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ’™ This particular macaron is more textured than I'd like, which was a result of not blending the dry ingredients enough. Aside from that, I'm pretty content with the final result. ๐Ÿค—

What can Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki teach us about sustainability?

๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒน Miyazaki is a renowned animator and Academy Award winner that has written, directed, and produced over a dozen feature films. His films often focus on young adult protagonists, yet the themes are complex and encourage personal reflection. One of Miyazaki's common themes is environmentalism: he challenges his viewers to think about the consequences of greed and reflext upon the never-ending struggle between human progress and environmental conservation.

๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒน This is why I chose to bake these spirits from Spirited Away for my ! Spirited Away focuses on water pollution and scarcity, and almonds take up 1,900 gallons of water to produce just ONE pound.
๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒน These macarons are made of a mixture of oat and lentil flour. They're filled with a whipped rose and French vanilla water ganache.

Hazelnut cake and macaron balloon! ๐Ÿ’™
๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ’™ This is just a quick naked cake I whipped up topped with hazelnut macarons. I used hazelnut powder as an ! ๐Ÿ˜Œ I'm hosting an for the 20th of October for anybody interested.
๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ’™ Macaron balloons are SO FUN, I swear. I'm itching to do UP and IT themed cakes/macarons now. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐ŸŽˆ I used a small, upside-down, Styrofoam cone and just toothpicked the hazelnut shells on. ๐Ÿค—

๐Ÿข๐Ÿ’š Meet Mary Shelley, Mishelle, and Shellby. ๐Ÿค— They're filled with chocolate Turtles ganache.
๐Ÿข๐Ÿ’š When I was younger, I remember watching turtle eggs hatch on the shore and the newborn turts do their cute 'lil shuffle to the water. It was one of the coolest things to witness - in Qatar, no less!

๐Ÿตโค Matcha has always been one of my favorite flavors, and sage green one of my favorite colors! Matcha has a vegetal and earthy taste that I wanted to enhance and expand on.
๐Ÿตโค The cake itself is matcha with a few drops of lavender extract, and the buttercream is Swiss made out of equal parts butter and banana. Everything you see is naturally colored. ๐Ÿค—

๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’› This cake is covered in buttercream, topped with white chocolate honey ganache, Winnie character macs, and MACARON BALLOONS. ๐Ÿ˜ ...You can probably tell which component I enjoyed making the most. ๐Ÿ˜
๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿ’› I must say, I thought I was making a mistake using regular (circular) macarons for the balloon cluster, but it turned out just fine. I used an upside-down Styrofoam cone and stuck the shells on using toothpicks.

After my Raya & The Last Dragon macs, I wanted to create another South Asian icon, and one of the coolest comic book characters out there: Chacha Chaudhary! I also wanted to discuss a more harmful and inescapably racist Indian caricature: Apu. Tomorrow is India Independence Day, and as independent a nation India may be, the shackles of bigotry and racist stereotypes are as prominent as ever.

Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, a South Asian character (with a completely nonsensical South Asian last name) on the show โ€œThe Simpsons,โ€ was voiced by a white voice actor in a thick & stereotypical โ€œIndianโ€ accent. I hope youโ€™re starting to see the problem here. Just throwing on an accent thatโ€™s โ€œIndianโ€ as per racist ideals completely undermines the authenticity & value of the role. It isnโ€™t even the accent itself! Altering Apuโ€™s accent to an American one wouldnโ€™t have rectified the stigma that came from applying Apuโ€™s accent the derogatory fashion itโ€™d been applied. When people imitate accents, not just the Indian accent, they often include stigmas about the race, ethnicity, or culture which they are mocking. The majority of accents have some kind of stereotype attached to them. European accents are seen as sophisticated and elegant; other non-white accents as uncouth or crude. European accents are classy and desirable, while accents usually associated with the working class, like Latino accents, Asian accents, or African accents are viewed as โ€œdirtyโ€ or โ€œlower class.โ€ Sure, people poke fun at British accents, but when they do so itโ€™s never with the intention of making it sound unrefined, as is the case with other accents.ย 

What may have been humorous in the 90s, isnโ€™t now.ย 
The Simpsons portrays the generic American life with whatever problems that may entail, which is why the show resonates with Americans. In America today, and consequently in much of mainstream media, racist stereotypes and accents are far too detrimental. We canโ€™t afford to continue dismissing how hurtful mocking accents can be under the pretense of a "joke."

๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ”ฅ In my last post, which I suggest you check out if you haven't already, I used pistachio powder instead of almond powder. For these s'macarons, I considered using Graham crackers, but used digestive cookies instead! I was surprised by how well it worked. This just goes to show how easy it is to replace almond powder!
๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ”ฅ I filled these with a simple chocolate ganache and, of course, a roasted marshmellow. I can't begin to tell you how delicious these are!! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

Macaron wind turbine made of 100% pistachio! ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿƒ

๐Ÿ’š If you know anything about macarons, you (hopefully) are aware of the main ingredient: almonds. A couple months ago, I read Grist's article "Are Pistachio The Nuts of The Future," which, as you can probably tell from the title, explores pistachios as a more efficient and less harmful alternative to almonds. I was personally shocked to read about the ramifications of the growth and harvesting of almonds, consequentially my business and myself as a consumer of almond powder. The following is an excerpt from the article that I think sums it up pretty simply:
๐Ÿ’š "Pistachio trees require somewhere between one-third and one-half as much water as almond trees. Unlike almond trees, pistachio trees don't die during extended droughts. Their metabolism merely slows and when water returns, they start producing nuts again. And they can produce nuts for 80 years or longer, almost four times the life span of an average almond tree. Pistachios can also handle levels of salt that have already killed many an almond tree. "
๐Ÿ’š Upon learning this, I was set on exemplifying pistachios as an exceptional substitute to almonds. Not only that, but in wind turbine form. Translation: if I could do it with a structure as stubborn as this, you can consider pistachios too!
๐Ÿ’š I know, you're probably questioning the influence of a dessert as trivial as macarons (or you absolutely don't care/are making the crazy finger motion). However, this doesn't just concern macaron lovers/bakers.
Let's put pistachios to the side for a moment and compare fruits to almonds. Strawberries, tomatoes, and oranges take about 11 gallons, on average, to produce 1 pound. Almonds? 1,900 gallons. Consider this while the world is burning before our very eyes. While wildfires wreak havoc in Italy. In Greece. In Turkey. California. It's essential that we get our priorities straight while we still can. Before we're shoved off of the brink we're so lazily and obliviously lounging by. It's through the seemingly "trivial" strides (like macarons) that we make a difference; that we make the world a better and greener place (as in, pistachio green).

๐Ÿ’ชโ™ฅ๏ธ I've missed making circular macarons, and this is the closest I can get myself to baking them! After all the crazy character macs I've made, baking normal macarons just doesn't feel the same to me (albeit it was relaxing for a change.) ๐Ÿ˜†
