British explorer Mark Evans completes desert trek
BBC News - British explorer Mark Evans has successfully crossed one of the world's most inhospitable deserts.
He was accompanied by Omani companions Mohammed Zadjali and Amer Al-Wahaibi.
The trio arrived on Wednesday in Doha, Qatar, after a 49-day trek on foot and by camel across 1,200 kilometres of Arabian desert known as the Rub' Al-Khali, meaning "The Empty Quarter".
They are the first people to complete this coast-to-coast journey, from Salalah in Oman to Doha, in 85 years.

They were following the route of an earlier British explorer, Bertram Thomas. >>

An unforgettable taste from Oman
Of the few shops housed in the traditional market place built along the Katara beach, Khalid al-Jabri’s stall is by far the sweetest – he is the only one who makes and sells Omani halwa.
Right from the start of , al-Jabri’s authentic take on lip-smacking Omani halwa has been generating quite a buzz among visitors to Katara and its beachfront. Most of the small shop, which will be open till the last day of , is occupied by a giant cooking pot, and al-Jabri prides on being a one-man show. >>

Travelling during Ramadan
For many travellers, a trip to any Muslim country is not complete without wandering around the chaotic bazaars while tasting local street food. However, be prepared if you are travelling to a Muslim-majority area during Islam's holiest month, Ramadan, as you might find that roads and bazaars are almost abandoned, with no refreshments whatsoever available on the street.
Ramadan (also spelled Ramadhan and Ramzan), a month-long festival, falls in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is the time when Muslims all around the world fast during daylight hours every day. The month definitely brings a lot of joy for Muslims, but for many non-Muslims and travellers, travelling or living in a Muslim-majority country during this time may come with some inconveniences and restraints. On the bright side, however, it offers a chance to see a different side of life in Muslim countries. It's an incredibly important, sacred and religious time for Muslims, and while many tourists do keep visiting Muslim countries throughout the year including Ramadan, some basic knowledge about this special tradition will help to make your experience a fascinating one.
Ramadan
Ramadan is the 9th and holiest month in the Islamic calendar and lasts 29–30 days. Muslims fast every day for its duration and most restaurants will be closed until the fast breaks at dusk. Nothing (including water and ci******es) is supposed to pass through the lips from dawn to sunset. Foreigners, travellers, etc are exempt from this, but should still refrain from eating or drinking in public as this is considered very impolite. Working hours are decreased as well in the corporate world. Exact dates of Ramadan depend on local astronomical observations and may vary somewhat from country to country. Ramadan concludes with the festival of Eid al-Fitr, which may last several days, usually three in most countries.

The 14 Most Beautiful Places in the Middle East
From paradise islands to awe-inspiring deserts, we list 14 of the most stunning spots in the Middle East.
Khor al-Udaid
One of the Middle East's most unique landscapes, Khor al-Udaid features an extraordinary juxtaposition of desert and sea on the Qatari coast of the Persian Gulf. By day the sea smoothly draws up amongst the soft white sand dunes, creating a beautifully clear and still inland sea, before retreating again at night. During sunsets, the landscape becomes all the more glorious, reflecting a myriad of rich colors on the sparkling sands and waters. >>
