Palau Conservation Society
Founded in 1994, PCS is a non-government organization that work to protect Palau's unique natural environment for our people and visitors
PCS was formed in 1994, the same year that Palau became independent. In the face of mounting development pressure, a group of 10 visionary leaders established the Palau Conservation Society to ensure sustainable growth. Starting with species-based educational programs, PCS has expanded to address issues from local concerns to global changes. PCS celebrates its anniversary every year on June 14, the annual “Palau Conservation Day.”

Today is Shark Awareness Day, and we celebrate Shark conservation in the world’s first Shark Sanctuary, Palau. In Palau, we've already taken bold steps by declaring all our waters a sanctuary for sharks. Commercial shark and ray fishing has been outlawed. No sharks are permitted on board boats and bycatch must be released alive.
We’ve seen how sharks bolster tourism, biodiversity, and our way of life. Without them, mid-level predators often explode in number, leading to a collapse in herbivores and a rapid decline in coral cover. This domino effect can turn vibrant reefs into barren underwater deserts. Let's protect our sharks as they keep our ecosystems intact.
Let’s also teach our children that a live shark is worth more than a dead one. They're economic and ecological importance is crucial for Palau's tourism and culture. Lets teach them that Sharks don’t hunt humans. Sharks mistake us for prey in rare cases, and most bites are non-fatal and accidental. Out of the hundreds of shark species, only a few have ever posed any risk to people.
Sharks should fear us more than we fear them, millions are killed by humans each year, while humans are rarely harmed in return.
Let’s replace fear with respect, and protect these vital ocean guardians.

🌏 Happy World Environment Day from Palau Conservation Society! 🌿
Today, we celebrate the beauty, strength, and resilience of our island home. This year, under our theme “Beluad ma Debed: Our Legacy, Our Future,” we honor the deep connection between our people and our environment — a bond passed down through generations and a promise we make to those yet to come.
From our rich reefs to our lush forests, protecting Palau means protecting the identity, culture, and future of our children.
💚 Let’s continue to cherish, protect, and act — for the land we love and the future we believe in.

On May 29, 2025, Palau High School Spartans took learning beyond the classroom for an unforgettable Spartans Day Activity in Airai under the project “Youth and Oceans: Fostering a Culture of Environmental Stewardship.”
From the lush trails of Oikull to the rich waters of Ngesaol, students engaged in outdoor exploration of local flora and fauna, experienced traditional tools, and discovered the traditional fishing method of Omengesokes and Omengesiau.
This activity deepened their connection with Palau’s natural and cultural heritage and reminded us of 3 important messages:
1️⃣ Nature is deeply tied to our culture – Our environment is not just a backdrop to life; it is at the heart of who we are as Palauans. It shapes our identity, our traditions, and our way of life — our klechibelau.
2️⃣ The environment depends on us, just as we depend on it – Clean waters, healthy forests, and thriving reefs can only continue to support us if we respect and care for them. Stewardship is not optional — it’s essential.
3️⃣ Learning begins young, but never ends – As students, they took their first steps into understanding our environment more deeply, but this journey of learning must continue throughout our lives. Everyone has something to learn — and something to teach.
The PHS Spartans, who stand together in unity and strength, call for collective action — to protect our environment, to pass down knowledge, and to inspire each other to be lifelong learners and stewards of our precious island home.
This activity was made possible through great collaboration. We thank the Oikull Rubak Council, Airai State Government, Delegate Rechirei, NgaraKerisebsub, Belau Medical Clinic, Koror State SWM, Belau National Museum, and MAFE. We also extend our sincere thanks to the Embassy of France to the Philippines and Micronesia for funding this activity.

Get out and explore!!! You never know what you might discover!
Aimeliik Elementary School Bobii Aikang video!

PCS would like to thank all the radio listeners today. We also apologize for those who were looking forward to the live video feed. Since we couldn't have live video feed during the environmental hour, here are the slides that the guests today were talking about.
Thank you again to 7th grade Teacher Viola Ngirngeterang and 7th grade student Branson Franz. Aimeliik school is an inspiration and we thank you for sharing your story.
As student Branson says, bom kerkikl a Komi er kau. Let's all do our part in keeping our island beautiful and clean.
