PRESS RELEASE: June 6, 2024
Palau to host Valiant Shield 2024

The Republic of Palau will host over 600 members of the U.S. armed forces for the Valiant Shield 24 exercise, taking place from June 7 to June 18, 2024.

The Office of the President and the Office of National Security advise the community that beginning tomorrow, June 7, there will be increased activity associated with the exercise. These include air traffic, such as jets flying overhead, and vehicle movement. You also will see more U.S. military personnel visiting our beautiful archipelago.

Valiant Shield 24, a biennial multinational field training exercise, is designed to enhance joint training and readiness across maritime, aviation, and land domains. Palau’s participation with this initiative aligns with our commitment to regional security, as outlined in the Compact of Free Association, which we have upheld for the past three decades. Our Pacific family in Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands will also host portions of the exercise.

President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. emphasizes that such collaborative exercises are key to maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

“Palau remains committed to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific and peace in our region. Because if you want to have prosperity you have to have peace. It starts with deterrence, and that requires we work together. We truly believe that we are stronger together,” he said.

The safety of our citizens and the participants in this exercise are a top priority for both Palau and the U.S. To that end, Palau’s National Security Coordinator and U.S. Department of Defense have been working with our local aviation and public safety bureaus and other local offices to ensure safety protocols will be in place.

A temporary rise in noise levels may occur due to aviation operations and a live fire exercise scheduled for June 16 or 17. Live fire training will be conducted by aircraft and naval vessels in international waters east of Palau.

We appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as we work with our partners to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.
