This moment right here, captured for us, the heart of what the Pacific Games is really about. Our athlete Tyreece Collins started the run portion of the race in 6th place and we were excited for him to give his all in what is usually his strength in a triathlon. But very quickly we knew something was wrong. He was stumbling, and disoriented, dizzy and unsteady. We called for him to stop but he insisted on continuing. The race medic followed Tyreece on a bike as he slowly stumbled on through the last half of the 5km, runner after runner overtaking him until he had dropped all the way to 14th place. His vision was blurry and he slowed even further, unsure of his steps. Thats when Lieslie Taksiau of Palau came running by. The two athletes didnt know each other. But Lieslie saw Tyreece was in trouble and he reached out to guide him along. With encouraging words, a nudge of his shoulder, a steadying hand when Tyreece stumbled, "Come on we go together, nearly there. Lets go. We can do it together."
Thats how they ran the final kilometre and came to the finish. And when Tyreece finally crossed the line, it was Lieslie who congratulated him first and then helped him walk to the recovery tent where he could get medical attention.
We are proud of Tyreece and his determination and resolve to finish the race, no matter how hard the struggle.
And we are inspired by the example set for us by a young man from Palau, racing in his first ever international event. Grateful for the reminder that while we may come to these Games to compete against each other, its also a precious opportunity for us to gather as one Pacific family, connected - not divided - by the blue moana of Oceania. And that when faced with difficulty and struggle, we can choose, like Lieslie Taksiau, to raise each other up.
Because "We can do it together."
